Set of parts for Shostakovich's String Quartet No.8 from Opus 110. This piece was written for and dedicated to the 'victims of Fascism' following a trip to Dresden. There are many recognisable themes in the piece includingthe Cello Concerto No. 1 and a little known tune from his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. This melody had itself been suppressed by official Soviet condemnation, many critics believe that in this piece Shostakovich is alsoportraying himself as a victim of Facism and tyranny.

Reger: Three motets op. 110

Max Reger’s large choral motets, op. 110 are great spiritual representations of the human soul fashioned during the last days of tonality. The spiritual abyss, anxiety and doubt lead to a tonal ordeal, as emotionally-charged counterpoint becomes paralyzed in a dense, complex texture and suddenly the knots are disentangled in a tenderness of unison phrases hardly to be surpassed, and Reger comes very close to his model, J. S. Bach. In addition to the three choral motets, for this CD the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, under the direction of Frieder Bernius, also performs Reger's seldom recorded chorale cantata O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, based on the Passion hymn by PaulGerhardt a true feast for all friends of choral music.

The initial sketches date from summer 1821: the work was completed by the end of the year and appeared in print the following summer – in an edition so riddled with mistakes that Beethoven angrily complained to the publisher. For this new edition Jonathan Del Mar consulted all known sources and came across previously unknown information in the course of his research. The edition appears with a meticulously edited and elegantly engraved musical text incorporating the latest findingsof scholarship, supplemented by a detailed Critical Commentary and notes on performance practice in Beethoven’s day.
