A European tour with Miriam Makeba in 1970 had brought Parlan to Copenhagen, where four off-days gave him time to look around the city. He liked what he saw and two years later he settled down in Copenhagen. Horace Parlan enjoys playing solo Piano ? but hasn?t had the chance to do it all that often. Parlan?s aim in making this CD was to give highly personal interpretations of compositions which he has cherished over the years but which have not been over-recorded. He says: "I am not a Tatum ? I have to make the material fit my particular style and I spent quite a bit of time working on the arrangement. I wanted to do a reflective CD ? no racehorse tempos, no pyrotechnics ? and also make the harmonic structures as interesting as possible."

Recording with When Granny Sleeps was like having a fine dinner and overnight stay with a warm and hospitable friend of a family. They had their music together and well rehearsed; they knew what they wanted from me (and Ben on keyboards); and they allowed me to do what I do best. The music itself had memories of the period when I was with Miles Davis in the 1970s - a certain kind of funky looseness with the guitar front and center a lot of the time. This band, if they stay together will definitely make some waves. Meanwhile, you will really have fun with this music. David Liebman.

CD 1 contains two radio broadcasts from San Antonio, Texas, April 13, 1946 and from Howard Theatre in Washington April 20, 1946 plus bonus tracks from Hurricane Restaurant in NYC, April 28, 1946. CD 2 features three radio programs from Worcester, April 27 1946 and from the Hurricane.

This 61 minute CD (11 tunes) was recorded in Hamburg in Oct. 2002. The band is comprised of four top European musicians - three Germans and one Dane. Half of the tunes are original compositions, the rest are older jazz standards ("Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans" and Duke Ellington's "Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues"), and newer jazz standards ("Groove Merchant"), also including some latin inspiration ("O Grande Amor"). Guitarist Ulf Meyer has a fine, flowing feel, sometimes reminiscent of Pat Metheny. Alex Riel, from Denmark, is one of the best and most famous drummers in Europe today. The four musicians on this CD are highly compatible, making the music sound effortless and relaxed.

The great Icelandic jazz saxophonist Sigurður Flosason meets a great Danish rhythm section. ?The Danish jazz scene has always interested me and by a series of coincidences, I seem to be becoming a small part of it,? says Sigurður Flosason. Two Storyville recordings already witness Flosason?s ties with the Danish jazz scene. One is his collaboration with Hammond organist Kjeld Lauritsen on ?Nightfall? and the other is with singer Cathrine Legardh on ?Land & Sky?. Now Flosason has brought together what he calls ?a Danish dream team for this music? with Nikolaj Hess on Piano, Lennart Ginman on bass and Morten Lund on Drums. The Eleventh Hour features 10 new compositions by Flosason, recorded on one of his many happy trips to Copenhagen.Sigurður Flosason completed a solo performer?s examination in classical Saxophone from the Reykjavik Music Academy in 1983. He then studied under Eugene Rousseau and David Baker, completing a Bachelor of Music degree in classical Saxophone and jazz in 1986 and a Master of Music degree in these subjects in 1988. He then took private lessons from George Coleman in New York in 1988-89. Sigurður works in several different fields of music.

Svend Asmussen is a world famous jazz-violinist and entertainer. He is now 93 years old and still going strong.He has had a lot of different groups during the years. The recordings were made in Hamburg, Germany, a city to which he was a frequent visitor in those years. The sound is fantastic and so is the selection of the standard tunes they play. Never before released, this hour of music (22 tunes), with Duke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra, is comprised of three radio broadcasts made during a six-month engagement at the Hurricane Club in New York City in 1943. (This engagement marked Ellington’s first New York club-gig since he played the Cotton Club in 1938.) Ellington’s band was at the height of its popularity and proficiency at this time, boasting many star soloists, including Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Sam Nanton, Rex Stewart, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown and the great vocalist Betty Roché. The musical repertoire consists primarily of Ellington’s and Billy Strayhorn’s greatest and most popular compositions. Ellington, himself, was very happy about the 6-month engagement at the Hurricane Club in New York City when these recordings were made, and was also very pleased by the overwhelming reception the fans gave his performances – all of which added to the exceptional high quality and enthusiasm which is so evident in the music on this CD. The orchestra is in top form, performing classic renditions of Ellington’s best music, including ”Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, and ”What Am I Here For?”, and Betty Roché’s fantastic singing on ”I Don’t Know What Kind of Blues I’ve Got”.

This CD was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and consists of a live concert in Jazzhus Montmartre in 1965 and a radio studio session (with violinist Svend Asmussen) in 1966. The repertoire on the CD (74 min./13 tunes) consists of some standards (George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington) and five Stuff Smith originals. The two rhythm groups are comprised of top Danish jazz musicians, plus the American piano star, Kenny Drew. The relatively long playing-time of the tracks allows Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen and Kenny Drew to do some extended soloing. Many jazz fans will agree that Stuff Smith is the best jazz violinist of all time, and this CD presents him at his very best. The overwhelming energy, creativity, drive and humor in his performance is further enhanced by an unmatched musical virtuosity.

CD 2 features two radio programs from Radio City in New York, May 18 and May 25, 1946. This double CD contains a series of different radio NBC broadcasts from the famous Blue Note club in Chicago, Illinois from the summer of 1953. The CD set also incudes a bonus recording from April 1944, a MBS broadcast from the Hurricane Restaurant in New York City. The broadcasts are featured complete with radio speaks and encouragements to buy bonds read by The Duke himself, plus bonus material and liner notes.

The three sessions here were recorded in N.Y.C. in 1945 ? 2 live sessions (Apollo Theatre and Zanzibar Club) plus one studio session (Radio City Music Hall). The 143 minutes (44 tunes) of music on this double-CD have never been released before. The repertoire is classic Ellington/Strayhorn material ? including one Strayhorn medley and two suites (?Trio In Blue? and ?Perfume Suite?) - plus several tunes which were never recorded commercially. Recorded at the end of WWII, the purpose of these three programs ? besides providing wonderful music ? was to promote the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds to help the war effort. A major attribute of this double-CD is the inclusion of several tunes that Ellington never recorded commercially, like ?Fickle Fling?, ?Hollywood Hangover? and ?I?d Do It All Over Again?. The Duke Ellington Orchestra which performed the eagerly-awaited Second Carnegie Hall Concert on Dec. 11, 1943, was a band which consisted both of famous old alumni and exciting new talent like clarinetest Jimmy Hamilton, bassist Alvin Raglin and vocalist Al Hibbler. Because of the recording ban during World War II, doing live concerts became vital to maintain both the band?s popularity and some form of income. Add to this the fact that Carnegie Hall was the most prestigious venue of them all, and its easy to understand why the Ellington Orchestra was determined to play its best that evening, performing old standards and Ellington favourites. Among the many high points from this marvellous concert (which fills two CD?s) are excerpts from ?Black, Brown and Beige?, Al Hibbler?s vocal rendition of ?Do Nothing ?Til You Hear From Me?, Rex Stewart?s showpiece ?Trumpet In Spades? and, above all, the first performance ever of ?New World A-Coming?.

The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines.Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD

Thad Jones ? one of the best and most successful big band leaders in the U.S. since the mid-sixties ? moved to Denmark in the late 1970?s and put together his own new 19-man big band, Eclipse, drawing on the absolute best talent among the top Danish musicians, plus several famous American musicians living in Denmark at the time.The American musicians in the band are pianist Horace Parlan, alto and baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab, drummer Ed Thigpen, trombonist Richard Boone, conga player Emmanuel Rahim and trumpeter Tim Hagans. Six of the twelve tunes (72 min. playing time) are recorded in the studio in 1979; six are recorded live in the Slukefter Club in Tivoli Gardens. This is the first time this music is being released on CD. Of the twelve numbers on the CD, Thad Jones wrote four of them and arranged eight. The musical style is be-bop and "modern" big band. Besides his beautiful tunes and arrangements, Thad Jones? intense enthusiasm, positive attitude and dynamic leadership brought out the absolute best in his carefully-chosen musicians, and they loved playing for him.Thad Jones was very happy with his "Danish" big band, too. He said. "This is the most concerned, dedicated group of musicians that I have ever worked with ?
