Music Minus One - Haydn: Cello Concerto In D

Music Minus One - Haydn: Cello Concerto In D

Like its sibling, the Concerto in C major, Haydn?s D-major Concerto No. 2 lay shrouded in mystery until 1951, when Haydn?s autograph score was discovered. Written between 1781 and 1783, this concerto is a more extroverted and sunny, if leisurely, work than the C-major concerto. It is almost impossible to find more relaxed movements in any other concerti by Haydn, making this an unusual and quite welcome addition to the composer?s canon. The concerto?s good nature and beautiful main theme are truly infectious and make it extremely rewarding to learn and perform. It is hardly surprising that it has remained one of the standard works in the cellist?s repertoire. This MMO edition features virtuoso Roman Wiszniowski and the Plovdiv Philharmonic in a gorgeous reference recording; then the orchestra under Maestro Todorov repeats it again minus you, the star ?cellist. A joyous and exciting experience awaits you! This deluxe 2CD set includes a slow-tempo practice version to help you as you learn the concerto.Includes an authoritative, newly engraved music score printed on high-quality ivory paper, and informative liner notes; a digital stereo compact disc featuring a complete performance of the concerto with orchestra and soloist, and a second performance minus you, the soloist; and a second compact disc containing a full-speed version of the complete version as well as a special -20% slow-tempo version of the accompaniment for practice purposes. The concerto is voluminously indexed for your practice and performance convenience.

Jim Odrich: Rondo For Clarinet Or Bass Clarinet

Jim Odrich: Rondo For Clarinet Or Bass Clarinet

Composer Jim Odrich's Rondo for Clarinet and Orchestra is a delight for any clarinetist. Odrich along with his brother, clarinetist Ron Odrich, decided the piece would be written for symphony orchestra, while giving the clarinetist the option to perform the solo part with either B Flat clarinet or the larger bass clarinet. The result of their efforts is a work that features moments of contemplative lyricism as well as exuberant expressions of joy and excitement. The orchestral figures are performed with comfort and elegance, while the rhythm section provides a subtle controlled underlying pulsation that never gets anywhere close to overpowering the orchestra. Ron performs the clarinet solo, adding a generous sprinkling of ad-lib creations. This Music Minus One edition includes a printed edition of the complete solo part, engraved on easy-to-read, acid-free ivory paper. The compact disc contains the complete performance, as well as a version minus you, the soloist. "I wrote this piece for my brother, Ron, who is a virtuoso clarinetist equally adept as a performer of both jazz and so-called ?serious? music genres. One of his many outstanding accomplishments has been to greatly expand the playing register of the bass clarinet. This instrument has long been used almost exclusively by composers and arrangers for its very unique-sounding low notes. Ron developed the capability to make the instrument sing in its middle and extreme upper registers much like an alto saxophone, something jazz clarinetists had never before attempted nor even thought to do." ?Jim Odrich

The Fine Art Of Ballad Playing - Standards For Trumpet Volume 6

The Fine Art Of Ballad Playing - Standards For Trumpet Volume 6

This collection of songs is derived from the classic recording of 1956 by Frank Sinatra with the orchestrations of master arranger Nelson Riddle. When Irv Kratka, the founder of Music Minus One asked me to do a trumpet version of Sinatra/Riddle collaboration I got very excited because back in 1956 while stationed at Bolling Air Force base in Washington, DC with the Airmen Of Note, the USAF Glenn Miller Band, I literally wore out that 33 1/3 rpm LP record! (If you remember those long-playing discs you're either a senior like me or an audiophile extraordinaire.) And here am I more than a half century later having recorded my renditions with the very same, unique backgroud tracks! These are purposely not 100% literal transcriptions in order for the notation not to be overwhelmingly complex. I wanted to be "user-friendly," so with that said, I suggest you listen carefully for the subtleties in rhythmic nuances especially. A major part of your training is to recognize these nuances in order to add them to your 'tool box' for ballad styling. And that brings me to the title of this volume, "The Fine Art Of Ballad Playing." Those of you who have had formal trumpet education will recall that an essential part of the Arban Book is, "The Art of Phrasing," which with its 150 Classic and Popular Melodies had a similar purpose to my series of standards. The concept of expression, dynamics and phrasing remain all important. In all of these renditions, I chose to be "faithful to Frank," who had a unique way of rarely straying far from the actual melody, especially on ballads, while always putting his "Sinatra Stamp" on it! Very simply put, think lyrics and "story" and that will guide you through the flow of the melody with it's "peaks and valleys." If you've not done this kind of study or training before, please realize it's totally okay to imitate and that's where the great value of Music Minus One comes in.
