An Evening's Pastorale is a lullaby, first published in 1916. It has been arranged here for SATB mixed voice choir with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. An arrangement for TTBB male voice choir is also available. The words have been written by the British poet Quinton Ayrton , and the music composed by the British organist, composer and conductor Wilfrid Shaw . It forms the perfect item for any choir who wish to start exploring a cappella singing, or for more experienced choirs who wish to add a lighter item to their repertoire.

The Water of Tyne is a traditional North Country folk song about lovers separated by the River Tyne. The flowing Piano accompaniment makes the most of the watery setting and adds poignancy to the song’s yearning emotion.William Gillies Whittaker was a highly respected English Choral conductor, teacher and composer. He was a close friend of Gustav Holst, with whom he exchanged voluminous correspondence and as composers they both made their own settings of English folksongs. For Whittaker these were generally Choral arrangements, often for the many choirs he conducted.

Oh! Fie, Shepherd, Fie is a traditional comic song, which tells the bawdy story of a young girl who meets a shepherd in a meadow one day, and tries in vain to resist his advances. The most popular melody was recorded by William Defesch (Willem de Fesch; 1687-1761), a Dutch composer and conductor who spent most of his career in London. It has been arranged here for Voice and Piano by Elisabeth Poston (1905-1987), a British composer and musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later worked for both the BBC and the Arts Council. She is best remembered for her setting of the Christmas carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree.

William Whittaker (1876-1944) was an English conductor, composer, and academic, who produced many choral arrangements of English folk songs. Blow The Wind Southerly originated in his native Northumberland, and tells the story of a woman hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover, a sailor, back home to her. This arrangement is for Voice with Piano accompaniment.

Matthew, Mark, Luke And John is a West Country folk song, arranged for SATB chorus by Gustav Holst . It was published as part of a collection of six such arrangements in 1916, forming the composer's opus 36b. The work was dedicated to W. G. Wittaker (1876-1944), a highly respected conductor, pedagogue, and composer. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry, he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams – they would often critique each other’s work – and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.

The text of The Long Day Closes is a contemplation of death and was sung frequently at funerals in the late 1800’s, particularly the funerals of members of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. This setting uses the full range of all the Voice parts.Composer Arthur Sullivan is known the world over for his operatic collaborations with W S Gilbert, including H M S Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance, among many others. But Sullivan was also a composer of man other works among them operas, Orchestral works, ballets, and hymns and church pieces. He wrote most of his part songs, unaccompanied songs for SATB, usually, before his partnership with Gilbert began.
