Paul Bowles: Blue Mountain Ballads

Paul Frederic Bowles was a composer of note and a leader among the young American artists in Paris in the 1930s before settling in Tangier, Morocco around the time these Songs were written. He is best-known as a novelist, yet his compositions are highly imaginative. These 'Blue Mountain Ballads' are settings of texts by the influential Southern playwright Tennessee Williams.

Giuseppe Verdi: I Vespri Siciliani (Libretto)

'Les vêpres siciliennes' (The Sicilian Vespers) was first performed at the Académie Impériale de Musique in Paris on June 13, 1855, to great critical acclaim. However, in travelling to then-conservative Italy it got Verdi into trouble with the censors for its tale of rebellions and tyrants. The plot had to be changed, and a happy ending was inserted in Naples and Palermo! This version of the libretto by Eugene Scribe is in Italian and English (the translation being by William Weaver).

Stephen Heller: L'Avalanche No.2

Work for Piano Solo by Romantic composer Stephen Heller. He was born in Hungary but made his career as a teacher and composer in Paris where he settled in 1838. He composed a signficant amount of music for the piano, most notably a number of studies that have tended to overshadow his reputation in other genres and remain most popular today. These studies include pieces of all kinds; variations, character pieces, operatic transcriptions and fantasies. L?Avalanche is perhaps the best known of these seeming to characterise the rapid energy of the cascading snow and macabre beauty of an avalanche.

Gaetono Donizetti: La Favorita (Libretto)

La Favorita, written in France by the Italian composer Donizetti is a tragedy, built around the ill-fated love affair between the king's mistress, Léonor, and a young novice monk, Fernand, who, not knowing her true identity, betrays his vows to pursue her. Frustrated by circumstance, obligation and misunderstanding, their love is realized only at her death. La Favorite was a favorite at the Paris Opéra, performed consistently until the early twentieth century. Since that time it has become more widely known in its Italian translation. This edition of the libretto is in both Italian and English.

Giuseppe Verdi: Rigoletto (Vocal Score)- Schirmer Edition

The libretto for Giuseppe Verdi's 'Rigoletto' was adapted by Francesco Maria Piave from Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse which was so controversial it had been banned in Paris after one performance. It is still recognised as one of Verdi's finest scores. The opening of the final act contains two of the most famous pieces in all opera: the Duke's "La donna e mobile" (which needs no introduction), and the famous quartet, "Bella figlia dell'amore," in which each character is expressing a different emotion. This edition is in Italian with an English version by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

Sydney Lambert: Six Pieces In The Early Grades For Piano

These elementary pieces are from a piano method Premieres Lecons-De Piano (a a la portee des enfants 1er age) published in Paris in 1886, for which Lambert was decorated by the King of Portugal and invited to become a musician of the Court. The Four Recreations are of a Baroque and Classical Style. The opening theme of the first one resembles the last movement of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Musik; the fourth one with is imitative figurations is characteristic of J.S Bach's writing in the Klavierbuchlein fur Anna Magdalena Bach. The second and third pieces are in the style of the country dances by Mozart and Haydn.

The second of three Solfege Des Solfeges books, this is an excellent set of exercises tailored towards the Solfege method of sight-singing, and remains a popular method for teaching aural musicianship to beginner singers. First published in 1891, this edition has been translated into English by J.H. Cornell. Adolphe-Leopold Danhauser (1835-1896) was a French musician, composer, and pedagogue. His name was often Germanised to Dannhäuser . Having been appointed as Professor of Solfeggio at the Paris Conservatory he is best known for his pedagogical works, such as the 1878 text book Théorie de la Musique , but also composed several operas and other choral pieces.

Elliott Carter: Symphony Of Three Orchestras (Score)

Born in New York City on 11 December 1908, Elliott Carter began to be seriously interested in music in high school and was encouraged at that time by Charles Ives. He attended Harvard University where he studied with Walter Piston, and later went to Paris where for three years he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He then returned to New York to devote his time to composing and teaching.With the explorations of tempo relationships and texture that characterize his music, Carter has been one of the prime innovators of 20th-century music. The challenges of works such as the Symphony Of Three Orchestras are richly rewarding.

George Antheil: Sonata No.2 For Violin And Piano

Edited by Ron Erickson. Sonata No.4, completed in 1948, was entitled 'No. 2' by Antheil. It appears, from the list of workds he made in 1944, that of the works from the Paris years he wanted to consolidate the Sonata No. 1 with the third and ignore the second, so that all the violin and piano sonatas before 1940 would be known as one work - called Sonata No. 1. Modern notation conventions have been adapted to Antheil's chromatic-polytonal language in order to make the text as definite and as readable as possible. In this edition, poytonal key signatures sometimes are substituted for masses of accidentals.

Karel Husa: Sonatina For Piano

Karel Husa (b. 1921) is an American composer and conductor who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. He entered the Prague Conservatory in 1941, where his Sonatina For Piano (Opus 1) was written in 1943. It was first performed there in 1945, and not published until 1947, when he graduated from the Prague Academy and moved to Paris to continue his studies. The Sonatina is scored in three movements: Allegretto Moderato - Andante Cantabile - Allegretto Marciale . It is strongly tonal in the classical style, with few hints of the twentieth century dissonance that would later define his work. However, as always with Husa , hints of Czech folk song can be found lurking under the surface.

Frederic Chopin: Etude In E Major Op.10 No.3

Chopin's Etude In E Major (Op. 10 No. 3) is often cited as his most popular Etude . First published in 1833, it is often referred to as Tristesse or Farewell , alhough neither name was apparently authorised by the composer. While not quite as technically formidable as his other compositions, it is one of the more musically challenging to balance due to its lyrical melody and suspended inner harmonies. Frédéric Chopin (1710-1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist, whose compositional career was spent mostly in Paris. He only wrote music for the Piano, and is best known today for his 12 Etudes and 24 Preludes, a key part of any pianist’s repertoire.

Verdi La Traviata Libretto Ita/eng

The libretto by Francesco Maria Piave to Verdi's opera La Traviata is based on the play La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas the Younger. This play was a stage version of a novel by Dumas, published in 1848 and based on the life story of a young courtesan named Alphonsine plessis, known more euphoniously as Marie Duplessis, who died of consumption in 1847, at the age of 23.Verdi is said to have seen the play at the Theatre des Vaudevilles in Paris shortly after its premiere in 1852 and to have been deeply stirred by it. He had already signed a contract to provide a new opera for the Teatro Fenice in Venice and it was there, on March 6th, 1853, that La Traviata, its text based on the Dumas tragi-comedy, was first given.
