This Sonata begins with an Allegro ben moderato, featuring a high melody played pianissimo in triple time. The piano comes to the fore in the second movement, marked Allegro, though it has a slower middle section. A short 'Recitativo-Fantasia' has both instruments really integrating and playing off each other, then fading to nothing, whereas the last movement Allegretto poco mosso is loud and declamatory, with a persistent melody. It was the first published work of the American composer and pianist Robert Muczynski (1929 - 2010), who also performed it at his Master’s degree recital in 1952. Muczynski composed all his Piano works at the keyboard, with the intention of performing them – he disliked academic analysis of his music and wanted people to just “let it be”. As a result, his music is imbued with a character and personality of its own. Often dismissed as “traditional” by critics, his works remain highly playable and popular today.

Wallingford Riegger (1885-1961) was an American cellist and composer, who is noted as being one of the principle proponents of Serialism and the twelve-tone technique in America. His Concerto (Op. 53) was commissioned in 1953 by the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and first performed at the Library of Congress. It is scored for Piano and Wind Quintet - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon - and is comprised of three movements: Allegro - Andante - Allegro Molto . Receiving critical acclaim as soon as it was released, the Concerto cleverly blends atonal and diatonic elements, creating an animated, condensed modern work, that has unfairly fallen out of the repertoire.

This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano, and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Antonín Dvorak's years in the United States, the little Sonatina in G major (sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements: Allegro risoluto, Larghetto, Scherzo (molto vivace), and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine, its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of American folk music in the movement.The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor, one in B flat major, and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness, and the same sudden brightening and then softening of mood, that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony.The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale is a substantial sonata-allegro movement, with three wonderful themes: the opening, syncopated idea in G major, a subsidiary thought in E minor, very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell, and finally a rich tranquillo melody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.

Each of these four short pieces is based on a folk tune or idiom and captures some slice of Americana. The first piece depicts the hustle and bustle of the city with catchy, tricky rhythms, jazzy playfulness, and motoric drive. The second piece, "In Slow Blues Tempo," has a bluesy manner to be sure, but is also sassy and spiky. The third Excursion, a set of variations on The Streets of Laredo, is mainly a lullaby. The final piece (Allegro molto) is a barn dance, somewhat in the spirit of Copland's from Rodeo, but jazzier and more amusingly mischievous.

The Fanfare Sonata, one of the rather too few works for solo trumpet, takes its name from the fanfare-like gestures which are the basis of much of its melodic and rhythmic material. In the opening Moderato there is an incantational first theme and an angularly lyric, rather wistful second theme. These themes reappear in the slow movement (Andante tenebroso) which is a development of both old and new material. The finale (Allegro burlesco) is sprightly, propulsive and high spirited until a final radical shift in mood takes place and the piece ends with a harsh, declamatory coda.

The Op.42 Notturno for Viola and Piano is an arrangement of the 1796-97 Serenade in D, Op.8, arranged by F. X. Kleinheinz (with Beethoven's approval) for Viola and Piano. The piece is comprised of seven short movements. The first is a simple march, while the second is an Adagio. The ensuing minuet is attractive and proves to be an interlude between two Adagios, of which the second alternates effectively with a contrasting Allegro molto Scherzo section. There follows an attractive Polonaise and a theme-and-variations marked Andante. A reprise of the opening march concludes the work. Overall, it is a delightful minor composition in Beethoven's vast output.

Ernest Bloch: Israel Symphony For Orchestra (Score)

This symphony, from Bloch's 'Jewish Period' evokes two Jewish traditional celebrations, 'Yom Kippur' (Day of Atonement) and 'Succoth' (Celebration of Harvest). It does this not by using traditional Jewish melodies or musical features; but explores Judaism spiritually. Bloch himself provided notes for the New York Philarmonic 1943 performance of the symphony: 'Though a single unit, the symphony falls into three sections. A slow introduction, Adagio molto ('Prayer in the Desert') is immediately followed by the Allegro agitato ('Yom Kippur'), with a main theme of bold, barbaric character...A short transition leads into the second part, Moderato ('Succoth') which, after a fierce climax, brings in the voice...This second part of the work is more contemplative, serene, a kind of prayer.' This is the Schirmer edition of the full score.
