The preference of English audiences for large-scale Vocal works led to Dvorák being commissioned in November 1883 to write this cantata for solo voices, chorus and orchestra for the 1885 Birmingham MusicalFestival.As the basis for his composition, Dvorák chose the ballad text “Svatebn košile” (literally “The Bridal Gowns”) from the collection “Kytice z povest národn ch” (“A Garland of Folk Tales”) by the Czechpoet Karel Jarom r Erben (1811 1870).Dvorák stipulated that the premiere take place in Bohemia. Zehn Choralvorspiele

The Ten Choral Preludes for Organ are intended for both liturgical purposes and concert performance. For this reason the notation is written in two staves, which is not usual for the Organ. The former of thetwo purposes forced the composer to respect certain limitations of technical complexity, so that even an untrained organist could perform the pieces. The themes to each overture are taken from Bohemian Brethren chorales, whichappear in their original form as brief “intonations” in the first few bars preceding each overture.
