Desert Child is a mix of a two-dimensional racing game, RPG and life simulator, set in the distant future on Earth, which is slowly being abandoned by people. The developer of the title is Oscar Brittain from Australia. The creator is an architect by education and made his debut in 2016 with a small game World's Fastest Pizza, released exclusively on PC. In 2017, Desert Child was funded by a successful Kickstarter fundraiser. The author was inspired by numerous anime productions on science fiction, including Redline or the legendary Akira and Cowboy Bepop. Desert Child has been honored and awarded at numerous independent game festivals.
Story
Desert Child takes place in the distant future. The earth is slowly being abandoned by existing inhabitants who choose a new life on Mars, taking advantage of government travel subsidy programs. After a few years, however, the chance for an extraterrestrial move ends when the ticket price is raised to a level that only the richest can afford. The main character of Desert Child is a pilot of a levitating scooter who tries to make ends meet by carrying out various types of courier orders and hunting for people wanted by wanted posters.
Gameplay
The main element of Desert Child is scooter racing. The game is presented in a two-dimensional, side-scrolling style. Depending on the task being performed, we race in illegal competitions, hunt for a designated target or try to reach the end of the route as soon as possible, transporting valuable cargo and avoiding obstacles in our way. The scooter can be equipped with various types of weapons and power-ups, which we buy during visits to the city. On site, we can also talk with many interesting characters, mess with gangsters and discover secrets that will potentially lead us to the desired wealth.
