Basket Starter Discs

Basket Starter Discs

A brand new innovation for gardeners, these new Basket Starter Discs are a great option for easy gardening. The first time ever an easy solution for using beneficial microbes has been available for hanging baskets or tubs - and combined with fertiliser and water retaining gel in one simple to use disc.Created by the clever scientists that have pioneered Rootgrow, these discs are formed from compressed coir fibre, which binds in both beneficial biological microbes, and balanced slow release fertiliser -giving the perfect start to all hanging baskets, planters, tubs and windowboxes.Inserted at planting, when watered each disc swells to 5 times it's size, and the beneficial microbes will start to grow, bringing the compost to life and adding all the benefits of the natrual good microbes in the soil to the confines of a basket or tub. At the same time, the fertilsier is slowly released over several months, to give the perfect start to your plants. In addition, the water retaining crystals help prevent the compost from drying out by binding water in, reducing the amount of time and effort watering in summer. To use, half fill your basket or planter with compost, insert a disc and cover with a little more compost and plant as normal. Recommended doses are:Single pot to 3 litres (c. 15cm or 6' diameter) - 1 discSmall baskets and pots to 7 litres (22cm or 9') diameter - 2 discsMedium baskets and pots to 15 litres (30cm or 12' diamater - 3 discsLarge baskets and planters > 15 litres (35cm or 14'+ diameter) - 4 discs

Bletilla Blue Dragon

Bletilla Blue Dragon

Orchids are one of the most popular plants in the UK and when you see their exotic blooms, it's easy to see why. The ones that we are used to seeing are houseplants and need to be grown inside - however there is a hardy orchid that you can grow in your own garden!Bletilla, or the Hyacinth Orchid, is one of the hardiest and easiest to grow garden orchids in the UK, slowly forming clumps which produce their gorgeously detailed violet-pink flowers in early summer. When grown in light, dappled shade, bletilla is quite unfussy so it can be grown in the ground under trees, in lawns, or even in patio pots (in shade).'Blue Dragon' forms a clump of attractive, ribbed, sword-shaped leaves, with erect stems bearing many violet, fragrant, orchid-shaped flowers in spring and early summer. Blooms can reach up to 5cm wide, and each has a ruffled lip in a slightly darker shade, making them a stunning addition to your garden.Although hardy to -10°C, we recommend growing them in a container where they can be moved to a conservatory or unheated greenhouse during winter, and in mild areas a generous layer of dry mulch should be applied in autumn to provide protection for the corms.Alternatively, lift the corms in autumn and store it in a dry, frost-free place. One thing you need to remember is that bletilla should be kept dry during their winter dormancy, as they will not survive cold, wet soil.An easy to grow plant, which if left undisturbed, will naturalise and spread out to form good-sized clumps.Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot (dormant in winter so no leaves), ready for potting on or planting out when the soil warms, plants can reach 50cm high and 50cm wide.NB - Plants are dormant October to March so there may be no leaves on your plant when delivered.
