North Eurasian Trade in World History 1660–1860 The Economic and Political Importance of the Baltic Sea

North Eurasian Trade in World History 1660–1860 The Economic and Political Importance of the Baltic Sea

This book offers the first long-term analysis of the protracted struggle between Britain France Prussia Russia and Sweden for economic power and political influence in the northern part of the Eurasian continent between 1660 and 1860. This book shows how their commercial diplomatic and military entanglements determined the course of Baltic trade from the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century provoking among other things the decline of the Dutch Republic and the partitions of Poland-Lithuania. The author conceptualizes the Baltic Sea as one of North Eurasia’s western border basins alongside the White Black and Caspian Seas and employs novel statistical series of Baltic trade as a proxy for the long-term development of North Eurasian trade in world history. Based on extensive quantitative evidence and sources for the history of international relations this book outlines how North Eurasian trade became an object of growing tensions between various larger and smaller powers with a stake in North Eurasia’s riches. The book addresses the long-term impact of mercantilist policies territorial greed and military conflicts in North Eurasia’s border basins and accentuates the significance of developments in the preindustrial transport and commercial infrastructure of the North Eurasian landmass. Employing the concept of North Eurasia and its different borderlands and border basins this book overcomes previous limitations in the historiography of globalization and sheds light on a large continental landmass which researchers tend to leave aside for the benefit of a predominant maritime perspective in historical studies of globalization. North Eurasian Trade in World History 1660–1860 will be invaluable reading for students and scholars interested in world history East European history and the history of international relations and trade. | North Eurasian Trade in World History 1660–1860 The Economic and Political Importance of the Baltic Sea

Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

There is a traditional view that women were absent from the field of dramatic production in the early modern period because of their exclusion from professional theatre. Women and Dramatic Production 1550-1700 challenges this view and breaks new ground in arguing that far from writing in closeted retreat a select number of women took an active part in directing and controlling dramatic self-representations. Examining texts from the mid-sixteenth century through to the end of the seventeenth the chapters trace the development of a women-centred aesthetic in a variety of dramatic forms. Plays by noblewomen such as Mary Sidney Elizabeth Cary Mary Wroth Rachel Fane and the women of the Cavendish family form an alternative dramatic tradition centred on the household. The powerful directorial and performative roles played by queens in royal progresses and masques are explored as examples of women's dramatic production in the royal court. The book also highlights women's performances in alternative venues such as the courtroom and the pulpit arguing that the practices of martyrs like Margaret Clitherow or visionaries like Anna Trapnel call into question traditional definitions of theatre. The challenges faced by women who were admitted to the professional theatre companies after 1660 are explored in two chapters which deal with the plays of Katherine Philips Elizabeth Polwhele Aphra Behn and Mary Pix among others. By considering the theatrical dimensions of a wide range of early modern women's writing this book reveals the breathtaking panorama of women's dramatic production and will be essential reading for students of women's writing and renaissance drama. | Women and Dramatic Production 1550 - 1700

Digital Enterprise Transformation A Business-Driven Approach to Leveraging Innovative IT

Digital Enterprise Transformation A Business-Driven Approach to Leveraging Innovative IT

The integration of technological innovations such as In-Memory Analytics Cloud Computing Mobile Connectivity and Social Media with business practice can enable significant competitive advantage. In order to embrace recent challenges and changes in the governance of IT strategies SAP and its think tank - the Business Transformation Academy (BTA) - have jointly developed the Digital Capability Framework (DCF). Digital Enterprise Transformation: A Business-Driven Approach to Leveraging Innovative IT by Axel Uhl and Lars Alexander Gollenia outlines the DCF which comprises six specific capabilities: Innovation Management Transformation Management IT Excellence Customer Centricity Effective Knowledge Worker and Operational Excellence. In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) Queensland University of Technology (Australia) University of Liechtenstein (Principality of Liechtenstein) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) SAP and the BTA have been validating each capability and the corresponding maturity models based on analyzing several ’lighthouse’ case studies comprising: SAMSUNG IBM Finanz Informatik The Walt Disney Company Google Inc. HILTI AG. Digital Enterprise Transformation presents how these companies take advantage of innovative IT and how they develop their digital capabilities. On top the authors also develop and present a range of novel yet hands-on Digital Use Cases for a number of different industries which have emerged from innovative technological trends such as: Big Data Cloud Computing 3D Printing and Internet of Things. | Digital Enterprise Transformation A Business-Driven Approach to Leveraging Innovative IT

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

As one of the pioneers of Piezoelectric Actuators I have contributed to the commercialization of various products for over 45 years including million-selling devices micro-ultrasonic motors for smart-phone camera modules by Samsung Electromechanics piezoelectric transformers for backlight inverters by Apple laptops multilayer PZT actuators for diesel injection valves by Denso Corporation and piezoelectric energy harvesting modules for Programable Air-Burst Munition by the US Army. During the development period for piezoelectric actuators and transformers I found that the bottleneck for device miniaturization was heat generation under a high-power drive condition. Thus in parallel to the piezo-actuator developments I have been developing various high-power density piezo-ceramic materials with the loss mechanism clarification. Hence I considered that it was time to organize a textbook based on the previous studies including my materials development philosophy to stimulate younger generations to reach to the energy density of up to 100 W/cm3 in the future. Increasing efficiency and saving energy and space (compactness) are one of the important approaches in this 21st-century sustainable society. High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisims introduces the theoretical background of piezoelectrics electromechanical phenomenology loss mechanisms practical materials device designs drive and characterization techniques and typical applications and looks forward to the future perspectives in this field. This book is NOT an overall review of this area but it focuses on important and basic ideas under my development philosophy to understand how to design and develop high-power piezoelectric materials and devices. This textbook is designed for self-learning by the reader aided by the availability of: • Chapter Essentials – Summary for quick memory recovery • Check Points – Answers are provided in the Appendix • Example Problems – To enhance the reader’s understanding with full detailed solutions • Chapter Problems – For the final exam or further consideration | High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms
