The title was released on the PC and XONE platform, and the independent creator Dan Fornace is responsible for its creation. with Microsoft, and has worked on such productions as Trials Evolution, Mark of the Ninja, Joe Danger 2: The Movie, Dust: An Elysian Tail or Ori and the Blind Forest. The action of the game is set in the fantastic world of Aether, in which individual civilizations have the ability to control the elements of water, fire, air and earth. The player takes on the role of a representative of one of the races and, fighting with opponents, tries to discover the mystery underlying the conflict prevailing in the land. The gameplay mechanics of Rivals of Aether were inspired by the Super Smash Bros series known from Nintendo consoles. and combines the features of old-school, two-dimensional fights with elements of a classic platformer. The fun boils down mainly to fights taking place in various, two-dimensional arenas. However, they are not completely flat, and filled with various platforms, such as walls, roofs of buildings or tree branches, which we can use during combat, jumping on them like in typical platform games. The range of available characters is also very original, representing the races inhabiting Aether, which are crossbreeds of various species of animals. In addition to the typical set of abilities and blows, each of them also has three powerful special abilities based on the power of one of the four elements. Dan Fornace's production offers several different game modes, designed for single and multiplayer games. In the story mode, we fight other AI-driven opponents, during breaks getting to know the story of the game and the secrets of the land of Aether. In Abyss mode we face alone or in cooperation with a friend against waves of enemies, trying to survive as long as possible. In Versus mode, available both locally and via the Internet, we fight other players in the 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 variant.
