Pieris 'Forest Flame' (Pieris Japonica 'Forest Flame') - Shrub

Pieris 'Forest Flame' (Pieris Japonica 'Forest Flame') - Shrub

Best in acid or neutral soils, pieris are essential spring border shrubs. Elsewhere, they will grow exceptionally well in containers of lime-free, ericaceous, compost. They are mountain forest plants, originally from the Far East, and appreciate a little shade to prevent scorching to the new shoots and some shelter from late spring frosts, which cause similar damage. ‘Forest Flame’ is one of the most colourful varieties, with brilliant red, new growths turning later pink and then cream, appearing at the same time as the sprays of lily of the valley flowers. The plant itself is hardy at H5 and only needs to be sheltered in extreme cold weather conditions. The plant is prone to potential diseases and pests so bear this in mind when caring. Stick to the rules of pruning group 8 for maintaining this plant. Hakonechloa Macra (Japanese Forest Grass / Hakone Grass)

Hakonechloa Macra (Japanese Forest Grass / Hakone Grass)

Native to the mountainous regions of Japan, this perennial is celebrated for its graceful, cascading foliage and its ability to thrive in shaded and partially shaded areas. The standout feature of Japanese Forest Grass is its slender, arching leaves that form a soft, flowing mound. The foliage typically has a rich green color, but there are also cultivars with variegated or golden leaves, such as Hakonechloa Macra ‘Aureola’, which is known for its vibrant yellow-green blades. In autumn, the foliage often takes on warm tones of red, orange, or bronze, adding seasonal interest. The plant's fine texture and mounding habit make it an excellent choice for adding softness and contrast to garden beds. It pairs beautifully with bold-leaved plants like hostas, ferns, and heucheras, or with other shade-loving plants like Japanese maples, hydrangeas, and hellebores. Japanese Forest Grass - an excellent choice for brightening up darker corners of the garden where many other plants might struggle. While it can tolerate full sun, it prefers dappled shade, where its foliage color and texture are at their best. The plant is relatively low maintenance once established. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. In spring, any dead or damaged foliage can be trimmed back to encourage fresh growth. Beyond that, it requires little attention, making it a great choice for gardeners seeking an attractive yet easy-care plant. Bisset Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii)

Bisset Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii)

The canes of this tall bamboo have a beautiful shine and are a mix of greens, yellows and oranges. Bisset Bamboo is a quick upwards-grower and it creates dense masses of leaves as it goes. These qualities make it a popular choice for creating walls of bamboo, either as a privacy screen, or as weather protection for other, more fragile plants nearby. As the canes reach heights above 3m, they start to arch sideways and will sway more easily in the breeze – which can have a very calming effect on your garden. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plant-types. Traditionally from Asia, its hardiness means it can actually be grown very easily in Britain – visitors to your garden will be surprised and impressed to see it there. As a forest plant, it appreciates a steady supply of moisture and compost. And as an enthusiastic grower, you should give Bamboo room to expand, we suggest placing infant plants about 100cm apart. Latin Name: Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii English Name: Bisset Bamboo, Bisset’s Bamboo, David Bisset Bamboo Species: Poaceae Genus: Phyllostachys Foliage Type: Evergreen. Foliage: Green. Black Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Nigra)

Black Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Nigra)

One of the most elegant and distinctive types of bamboo. Its black canes can reach incredible heights. As you can see in some of the photos here on GardenPlantsOnline, Black Bamboo’s tall, slim canes are often ‘scorched’ with highlights of golden-brown. Ruscus-leaved Bamboo (Bambusa Shibataea Kumasaca)

Dwarf Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Pumilus)

Dwarf Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Pumilus)

A bright and attractive bamboo shrub that is commonly used for ground coverage. Dwarf Bamboo has brighter leaves than its sister Dwarf Fern Leaf Bamboo, but their shape is similar – broad, pointed, and aching away from their stems in uniform patterns. Originally from Japan, it is a determined grower that can thrive in conditions that would defeat larger bamboo plants. It creates rounded mounds of thick foliage which look best if they are aggressively cut back in early spring. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plant-types. Traditionally from Asia, its hardiness means it can actually be grown very easily in Britain – visitors to your garden will be surprised and impressed to see it there. Golden Crookstem Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Aureosulcata Aureocaulis)

An evergreen bamboo with a very neat and tidy upward growth habit. Golden Crookstem Bamboo has a very striking appearance – its canes are a mix of pale yellow and red when first sprouting, they then change as they mature to have golden-yellow on the side facing away from the sun and a deep red on the side that is exposed to sunlight. This red colouration is more pronounced when nights are cold. Its green leaves hold their colour all-year-round – a very “visually interesting” plant. Dwarf Fernleaf Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Distichus)

Dwarf Fernleaf Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Distichus)

A rare and interesting bamboo shrub, it is one of the smallest bamboo plants available. Dwarf Fern Leaf Bamboo has an odd name, because its leaves are not fern-like at all. As you can see in the photos here on GardenPlantsOnline, its green leaves are blade-shaped and appear in symmetrical arrangements, more like tiny palm leaves or a hibiscus plant. Whatever you want to call it though, this a great plant for Japanese rock gardens, patio containers, ground coverage and courtyard-style designs. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plant-types. Traditionally from Asia, its hardiness means it can actually be grown very easily in Britain – visitors to your garden will be surprised and impressed to see it there. Broadleaf Bamboo (Bambusa Sasa Palmata Nebulosa)

Broadleaf Bamboo (Bambusa Sasa Palmata Nebulosa)

Large green leaves with a central yellow vein are the signature of this bamboo. The leaves of Broad Leaf Bamboo tend to brown and dieback along their edges during the winter. Thankfully, they are replaced with lush green foliage in the spring time. Broad Leaf Bamboo is an aggressive grower that is often used for ground coverage or for quickly creating flat-topped hedges. Due to its vigorous nature, it should only be chosen if you can commit to keeping it under control. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plant-types. Traditionally from Asia, its hardiness means it can actually be grown very easily in Britain – visitors to your garden will be surprised and impressed to see it there. Dwarf Greenstripe Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Viridistriatus Auricoma)

Dwarf Greenstripe Bamboo (Bambusa Pleioblastus Viridistriatus Auricoma)

A beautifully patterned bamboo shrub that will give your garden a tropical quality. The ribbon-like leaves of Dwarf Green Stripe Bamboo are wider than other members of the Pleioblastus family, which is great for showing-off their yellow and green decorations. These colours will become more pronounced if the plant is grown in a sunny location. Not as vigorous as its relatives, it can still be used for ground cover (if you are patient), but it is more at home in containers and rock gardens.
