Eucomis may look exotic, but they are actually surprisingly easy to grow and care for! They are happy in a sunny spot in the border, or in a pot on the patio. They could also happily live in a conservatory, although they are hardy enough that they do not need to. For the lovely ‘Pineapple’ flowers to appear they must be in full sun, so avoid shade or being planted too closely to other plants that may shadow over the Eucomis. They need regular watering and feeding fortnightly, and must be planted in nice free draining soil. Cut old flower heads off when they look untidy.

Achillea are easy to grow and will do well in a sunny position in most well-drained soils, but will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water at least once a week during summer months until established, but keep watering in winter to a minimum. Once established Achillea are fairly drought tolerant. Remove spent flowers during the season to encourage more to grow. After flowering is complete, and autumn turns to winter, Achillea should be cut back to ground level preferably before the plants go completely dormant and the old flower spikes turn brown. They can be lifted and divided every three to five years, which will revitalise the original clump and give you new plants to grow elsewhere.

Calla Lilies are not cold hardy so should be grown indoors at times of the year when the temperature is regularly below 10C.  In the UK it’s probably best to grow these in a container where they can be easily moved to suit the needs of the plant.  When growing indoors they prefer a position with lots of natural light, but not too much direct sunlight.  Make sure you keep them well watered during the summer, not allowing the soil to dry out, but they will not like being sat in water for prolonged periods.  During the summer they can be moved outside to a position that gets plenty of light, but is sheltered from wind and the midday sun.  Avoid planting in full shade, but they will tolerate partial shade.  During the flowering season feed every 3 – 4 weeks with a liquid fertiliser, something like a liquid tomato fertiliser is perfect.  Remove the leaves at soil level once they have died. If you’ve grown your Lily in a pot, you can simply move the pot inside once the temperature drops and then once it goes dormant (November) move it to a dark spot until the spring and do not water. In spring repot your Calla Lily into fresh compost.
