Women of Color in the Aviation Industry

Women of Color in the Aviation Industry

Women of Color in the Aviation Industry offers a critical look at the reasons why the aviation industry remains underrepresented with minoritized groups particularly women of color. Despite the increased efforts to advocate for diversity equity and inclusion within the industry the diversity of its employees remains stagnant. Through interviews and conversations with a number of women of color this book argues that the industry is not doing enough to create and sustain a more equitable workforce. In this book readers will discover why less than 4% of qualified commercial airline pilots are women and of that less than 1% are Black women. The numbers of Latinx Indigenous people Asian and other people of color working in the aviation industry are lacking. This book explores how the aviation industry often fails to incorporate the experiences of women of color when developing and implementing diversity equity and inclusion initiatives and offers different perspectives on why it remains challenging to recruit and retain minoritized people to the industry. By bringing in the experiences of a variety of women this book asks readers to reflect on what it means for an organization to describe itself as one that supports diversity equity and inclusion. This timely important book is a valuable resource for a wide spectrum of researchers and students in aviation as well as gender race and ethnic studies. Whilst the examples in this book serve as a case study for aviation it can be used to examine other fields encountering similar challenges in creating a more equitable workforce.

Multicultural Counseling Perspectives from Counselors as Clients of Color

Multicultural Counseling Perspectives from Counselors as Clients of Color

This is the first book to explore the experiences of people of color in counseling from the perspective of individuals who are practicing counselors and were previously clients in counseling themselves. Marbley conducted a research study in which she interviewed eight individuals representing each of the major groups of color in the United States - African American Asian and Asian American Hispanic/Latino and American Indian to obtain the stories of their experiences in their own words. These stories provide insight into the problems in and failures of counseling services provided to people of color. She quotes extensively from these interviews throughout the book using the voices of the participants to highlight these shortcomings and personalize her discussion of the issues they have faced. A chapter is devoted to each of the groups of color as well as one to counseling issues related to gender. These chapters provide an overview of the literature on the historical experiences of these groups in mental health and a discussion of the counselors experiences and conclude with implications and recommendations for counseling and psychotherapy with these groups. Information from follow-up interviews conducted 12 years after the original ones are also provided to compare and contrast the participants responses to their earlier ones. Marbley concludes with a look at the need for a social justice movement within the mental health field in order to improve the experiences of and outcomes for people of color. | Multicultural Counseling Perspectives from Counselors as Clients of Color

Rising to Full Professor Pathways for Faculty of Color

Rising to Full Professor Pathways for Faculty of Color

Academe has made little progress in hiring and advancing faculty of color. Through the narratives of full professors of color this book aims to make visible their journeys - beset with lack of criteria transparency marginalization discouragement and discrimination on the way to success - to provide insights for junior and mid-level scholars as they negotiate their pathways to full professorship. This book offers readers a unique micro-and macroscopic window into the lived experiences of individuals who represent a multitude of social ethnic and cultural identities disciplinary domains academic and professional credentials and socialization experiences. They share their doubts and fears as they began their applications the contradictory advice they received who they consulted for guidance some of the indelible costs of the experience and when they encountered it how they dealt with initial rejection. In describing their persistence and success the contributors reflect on the rewards of the position and the opportunities it offers to play influential decision-making roles and become agents of change shifting institutional culture values and practices. Beyond filling a gap in the literature and research on and promotion to this position this book uniquely addresses the experiences of women and men faculty of color raising broad implications for how higher education recruits evaluates and rewards faculty work as well as the broader context of racial and social institutional goals and outcomes. This book is intended for several audiences. First for faculty of color who aspire to the rank of full professor. Second for faculty in general including allies who work tirelessly for social justice to dismantle white supremacy racism sexism and the range of discriminatory practices Third for administrators in senior leadership positions to make them aware of the inequitable path to full professorship and the gross underrepresentation of faculty of color at that rank whose experiences and expertise are now more than ever needed as student demographics are changing. | Rising to Full Professor Pathways for Faculty of Color
