Educational Leadership and Policy in a Time of Precarity

This book brings critical perspectives towards questions of how precarity and precariousness affect the work of leaders and educators in schools and universities around the world. It theorises the effects of precarity and the experiences of educators working in precarious environments. The work of school improvement takes time. Tackling the big issues in education – inequity opportunity gaps democracy and cohesion – also takes time. Education systems and sectors around the globe are functioning in increasingly casualised workforce environments which has implications for leadership in schools and in higher education institutions. Precarity also holds serious implications for policymakers and for the leaders and educators who have to enact those policies. This book brings together experts in the field to offer critical perspectives on questions of how we might theorise the effects of precarity and the experiences of those people working in precarious environments. Women of Color in the Aviation Industry

Women of Color in the Aviation Industry

Women of Color in the Aviation Industry offers a critical look at the reasons why the aviation industry remains underrepresented with minoritized groups particularly women of color. Despite the increased efforts to advocate for diversity equity and inclusion within the industry the diversity of its employees remains stagnant. Through interviews and conversations with a number of women of color this book argues that the industry is not doing enough to create and sustain a more equitable workforce. In this book readers will discover why less than 4% of qualified commercial airline pilots are women and of that less than 1% are Black women. The numbers of Latinx Indigenous people Asian and other people of color working in the aviation industry are lacking. This book explores how the aviation industry often fails to incorporate the experiences of women of color when developing and implementing diversity equity and inclusion initiatives and offers different perspectives on why it remains challenging to recruit and retain minoritized people to the industry. By bringing in the experiences of a variety of women this book asks readers to reflect on what it means for an organization to describe itself as one that supports diversity equity and inclusion. This timely important book is a valuable resource for a wide spectrum of researchers and students in aviation as well as gender race and ethnic studies. Whilst the examples in this book serve as a case study for aviation it can be used to examine other fields encountering similar challenges in creating a more equitable workforce.

Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements The Built Environment at Work

Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements The Built Environment at Work

Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements presents a detailed and comprehensive examination of the relationship between labour and the built environment and synergises these critical focus areas in innovative ways. This unrivalled edited collection of chapters analyses problems and presents possible solutions related to the employment and conditions of workers in the construction industry. It provides comprehensive coverage of the relationship between the global workforce and the built environment and is divided into four topical areas: how labour and the built environment relate to development; employment generation in the built environment; quality of employment in the built environment; and the impact of the built environment on labour in other sectors. Underpinning the entire book is the premise that the way the built environment is produced and its main products – buildings cities and towns – have an impact on large numbers of workers. At the same time the quality of the built environment requires construction workers who are well trained and with good working conditions. While cities and towns are the engines of economic growth they will not be able to fulfil their economic potential if poverty in the workforce is not addressed. Those who are unemployed underemployed or work in unfavourable conditions cannot fully contribute to production and at the same time are limited in their ability to purchase goods and services – therefore limiting economic growth and restricting improvements in their living standards. In addition investments in infrastructure housing and inner-city redevelopment cannot be sustainable if labour issues – i. e. poverty – are not addressed. This book aims at analysing this complex set of issues comprehensively and will be essential reading to a wide range of researchers across the interdisciplinary intersections of construction business and management economic development urban studies sociology political science and project management. | Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements The Built Environment at Work

Shaping Nations and Markets Identity Capital Trade and the Populist Rage

Shaping Nations and Markets Identity Capital Trade and the Populist Rage

Shaping Nations and Markets employs a mixed methods approach to contend that economic ideas organization of domestic interests and their economic power asymmetries of information and political institutions do not sufficiently explain the formation of national interests in processes of trade liberalization. The author proposes that something is missing—identity capital—which also empowers economic sectors that share either liberalizing or protectionist interests. Identity capital is an economic sector’s contribution to the stability of a national identity narrative; it correlates with the degree to which the workforce of any sector represents the dominant conception of national identity. Identity capital creates political power asymmetries among those sectors and impacts the formation of populist movements in both developed and developing states. This book offers a theoretical framework to unpack national identity trade liberalization nationalist-populism domestic politics and globalization. The author argues that the key for identifying whether liberalizing or protectionist coalitions prevail in trade negotiations is identity capital. He offers a comparison of the three largest contemporary federal multicultural democracies: Brazil India and the United States from the Doha Development Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 to the rise of populism in these countries in recent years. This book will be of great interest to graduate students and scholars of international relations international studies political science comparative politics and economic sociology. | Shaping Nations and Markets Identity Capital Trade and the Populist Rage

The Informal Sector and the Environment

The Informal Sector and the Environment

The informal economy – broadly defined as economic activity that is not subject to government regulation or taxation – sustains a large part of the world's workforce. It is a diverse complex and growing area of activity. However being largely unregulated its impact on the environment has not been closely scrutinised or analysed. This edited volume demonstrates that the informal sector is a major source of environmental pollution and a major reason behind the environmental degradation accompanying the expansion of economic activity in developing countries. Environmental regulation and economic incentive policies are difficult to implement in this sector because economic units are unregistered geographically dispersed and difficult to identify. Moreover given their limited capital base they cannot afford to pay pollution fees or install pollution abating equipment. Informal manufacturing units often operate under unscientific and unhealthy conditions further contributing to polluting the environment. The book emphasizes and examines these challenges and their solutions encountered in various sectors of the informal economy including urban waste pickers small-scale farmers informal workers home-based workers street vendors and more. If the informal sector is to Leave no one behind (as the Sustainable Development Goals promise) and contribute to inclusive growth (an objective of the green economy) then its impact on the economy as well as the environment has to be carefully considered. This book marks a significant contribution to the literature on both the informal economy and sustainable development and will be of great interest to readers in economics geography politics environment studies and public policy more broadly. Building the Integrated Company

Building the Integrated Company

This title was first published in 2000: Global competition is increasingly impacting on even the most isolated of companies; the only way for any company to sustain competitive advantage is by tapping into the single remaining area of great potential - the management of people. If we want to be an above-average company we will need an above-average ratio of above-average people who perform at above-average levels. None of which will happen without above-average levels of management. Malcolm Birkin’s Building the Integrated Company offers a model for exploiting the human potential within organizations. This potential is one which in previous decades through an absence of focus on business basics and an adherence to mistaken ideas about sustainable competitive advantage we have contrived to turn into all-too-limited performance. The first stage in any new learning process is to unlearn the misplaced concepts and bad habits we have developed. Section One of the book describes and contrasts the similarities and differences of American European and Japanese management and then describes the characteristics of the Integrated Company which has absorbed and perfected the best systems and philosophies from around the world. Anyone seeking to follow this lead needs to be able to distinguish the realities of these management systems from the myths. Section Two is built around a series of 13 detailed and scored questionnaires containing over 240 individual questions enabling the reader to assess every aspect of their business from management focus to the behaviours of the workforce against the Integrated Company model. Section Three the largest and most important section deals with integration addressing the practical implementation of the systems and philosophies in a clear logical and hands-on manner. As the name suggests the Integrated Company is a holistic model involving every aspect of the business. Nevertheless managing people - the unlimited potential - remains the most complex
