Alan Wake is another work of the people responsible for the popular Max Payne brand. The whole thing was created in line with the convention of a psychological action thriller, and during development was clearly inspired by the cult TV series by David Lynch and Mark Frost called Twin Peaks (Twin Peaks).
The title character of this game is the author of popular novels. Unfortunately, Alan has not been able to write a new book for two years. The writer's wife, Alice, decides to take him on vacation to the picturesque town of Bright Falls to regain his creative powers. After the initial idyll, the beloved disappears in mysterious circumstances, and Wake goes in search of her. It turns out that Bright Falls is not a fairy tale setting at all, but a dark place full of evil forces - like the one where the action of Alan's latest work, a thriller that he cannot remember writing.
The game is about moving around the town and its surroundings, interacting with the inhabitants, finding fragments of a written book and fighting or escaping from enemies. During the trip we visit, among others lighthouse by the lake and we make our way through the dense forest in the mountains. We travel both on foot and behind the wheel of several vehicles, incl. a worn-out estate car. By the way, we observe extremely realistic weather effects and the cycle of changes of the seasons.
We have to be especially careful at night, because that's when all sorts of spooky phenomena materialize, such as the inhabitants of Bright Falls, possessed by the Darkness. Then a light source (e.g. a flashlight, flare, reflector, etc.) is useful, as it weakens the enemies and allows you to use firearms. The unusual character of the game is emphasized by the refined visuals. The three-dimensional world looks very suggestive, and the play of lights, atmospheric sound effects and background music are an additional advantage of Alan Wake.
