Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat's Last Theorem

Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat's Last Theorem

Updated to reflect current research Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat’s Last Theorem Fourth Edition introduces fundamental ideas of algebraic numbers and explores one of the most intriguing stories in the history of mathematics—the quest for a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. The authors use this celebrated theorem to motivate a general study of the theory of algebraic numbers from a relatively concrete point of view. Students will see how Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem opened many new areas for future work. New to the Fourth EditionProvides up-to-date information on unique prime factorization for real quadratic number fields especially Harper’s proof that Z(√14) is EuclideanPresents an important new result: Mihăilescu’s proof of the Catalan conjecture of 1844Revises and expands one chapter into two covering classical ideas about modular functions and highlighting the new ideas of Frey Wiles and others that led to the long-sought proof of Fermat’s Last TheoremImproves and updates the index figures bibliography further reading list and historical remarksWritten by preeminent mathematicians Ian Stewart and David Tall this text continues to teach students how to extend properties of natural numbers to more general number structures including algebraic number fields and their rings of algebraic integers. It also explains how basic notions from the theory of algebraic numbers can be used to solve problems in number theory. | Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat's Last Theorem

Operating System Design The Xinu Approach Second Edition

Operating System Design The Xinu Approach Second Edition

An Update of the Most Practical A-to-Z Operating System BookWidely lauded for avoiding the typical black box approach found in other operating system textbooks the first edition of this bestselling book taught readers how an operating system works and explained how to build it from the ground up. Continuing to follow a logical pattern for system design Operating System Design: The Xinu Approach Second Edition removes the mystery from operating system design and consolidates the body of material into a systematic discipline. It presents a hierarchical design paradigm that organizes major operating system components in an orderly understandable manner. The book guides readers through the construction of a conventional process-based operating system using practical straightforward primitives. It gives the implementation details of one set of primitives usually the most popular set. Once readers understand how primitives can be implemented on conventional hardware they can then easily implement alternative versions. The text begins with a bare machine and proceeds step-by-step through the design and implementation of Xinu which is a small elegant operating system that supports dynamic process creation dynamic memory allocation network communication local and remote file systems a shell and device-independent I/O functions. The Xinu code runs on many hardware platforms. This second edition has been completely rewritten to contrast operating systems for RISC and CISC processors. Encouraging hands-on experimentation the book provides updated code throughout and examples for two low-cost experimenter boards: BeagleBone Black from ARM and Galileo from Intel. | Operating System Design The Xinu Approach Second Edition

Advanced Engineering Mathematics A Second Course with MatLab

Advanced Engineering Mathematics A Second Course with MatLab

Through four previous editions of Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB the author presented a wide variety of topics needed by today's engineers. The fifth edition of that book available now has been broken into two parts: topics currently needed in mathematics courses and a new stand-alone volume presenting topics not often included in these courses and consequently unknown to engineering students and many professionals. The overall structure of this new book consists of two parts: transform methods and random processes. Built upon a foundation of applied complex variables the first part covers advanced transform methods as well as z-transforms and Hilbert transforms-transforms of particular interest to systems communication and electrical engineers. This portion concludes with Green's function a powerful method of analyzing systems. The second portion presents random processes-processes that more accurately model physical and biological engineering. Of particular interest is the inclusion of stochastic calculus. The author continues to offer a wealth of examples and applications from the scientific and engineering literature a highlight of his previous books. As before theory is presented first then examples and then drill problems. Answers are given in the back of the book. This book is all about the future: The purpose of this book is not only to educate the present generation of engineers but also the next. The main strength is the text is written from an engineering perspective. The majority of my students are engineers. The physical examples are related to problems of interest to the engineering students. Lea Jenkins Clemson University | Advanced Engineering Mathematics A Second Course with MatLab

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB

In the four previous editions the author presented a text firmly grounded in the mathematics that engineers and scientists must understand and know how to use. Tapping into decades of teaching at the US Navy Academy and the US Military Academy and serving for twenty-five years at (NASA) Goddard Space Flight he combines a teaching and practical experience that is rare among authors of advanced engineering mathematics books. This edition offers a smaller easier to read and useful version of this classic textbook. While competing textbooks continue to grow the book presents a slimmer more concise option. Instructors and students alike are rejecting the encyclopedic tome with its higher and higher price aimed at undergraduates. To assist in the choice of topics included in this new edition the author reviewed the syllabi of various engineering mathematics courses that are taught at a wide variety of schools. Due to time constraints an instructor can select perhaps three to four topics from the book the most likely being ordinary differential equations Laplace transforms Fourier series and separation of variables to solve the wave heat or Laplace's equation. Laplace transforms are occasionally replaced by linear algebra or vector calculus. Sturm-Liouville problem and special functions (Legendre and Bessel functions) are included for completeness. Topics such as z-transforms and complex variables are now offered in a companion book Advanced Engineering Mathematics: A Second Course by the same author. MATLAB is still employed to reinforce the concepts that are taught. Of course this Edition continues to offer a wealth of examples and applications from the scientific and engineering literature a highlight of previous editions. Worked solutions are given in the back of the book. | Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB
