Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms is a representative of the hack'n'slash genre with an isometric view. The production in question is a continuation of Kult: Heretic Kingdoms - a title created by 3D People studio in 2004 (although it debuted in many parts of the world, including Poland, in 2005). Over the years, the brand has passed into the hands of new owners, so Games Farm studio and the German publisher bitComposer Games are responsible for the creation of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms.
Story
The events told in Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms take place a few years after those we witnessed in the original, released a decade earlier. Nevertheless, the sequel tells a completely new story, not directly related to the previous game. The titular Heretic Kingdoms plunge into chaos, and the only chance to save them from being swallowed by darkness is to use the power and potential of the souls of the greatest heroes who walked on the earth years ago.Therefore, the only being able to save the world and at the same time the main character of the production is a demon known as the Devourer. His special abilities consist in being able to wander between two dimensions - the real and the shadow world - and devouring the souls of dead beings in order to take control of them.
Gameplay
Such conceptual assumptions give us the illusion of leading the team - although the protagonist is one, at a given moment we can control the demon in its pure form or take the form of one of three selected creatures from among the pool of those that are in the power of the Devourer. Thus, we do not see four characters on the screen at once - each soul shares a body with a demon, so changing the guided hero (which can occur at any time) simply means turning into someone else. Each captureable soul represents a hero with unique traits and skills, who develops independently of the rest of the "party". The speed of gaining experience points depends on how much time we spend in a given body. There is a large pool of souls waiting for the player, from which you can form a "accompanying" protagonist at a given moment - the demon can share the body with the souls of both good and righteous heroes, as well as rogues or even monsters.
