Magnolia Grandiflora Galissoniensis (Southern Magnolia) - Standard Extra

Magnolia Grandiflora Galissoniensis (Southern Magnolia) - Standard Extra

The Magnolia Grandiflora is a plant that is native to the Southern U.S states, ranging from Southeastern North Carolina, Central Florida and all the way to East Texas. The plant itself is very popular along traditional culture and as late as 2018, an iconic Southern Magnolia planted 200 years ago by President Andrew Jackson finally reached maturity. Magnolia Grandiflora typically has a single stem (or trunk) and a pyramidal shape. The leaves are simple and broadly ovate, 12–20 cm long and 6–12 cm broad, with smooth margins. They are dark green, stiff and leathery, and often scurfy underneath with yellow-brown pubescence. The large, showy, lemon citronella-scented flowers are white, up to 30 cm across and fragrant, with six to 12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring. Make sure to prune this plant in group 1 in Spring when the growth starts or group 13 in Summer if wall-trained. Be careful of potential pests and diseases when caring for this plant. Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin (Christmas Berry Red Robin) - Standard

Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin (Christmas Berry Red Robin) - Standard

Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin, also known as Photinia Serrulata Red Robin or occasionally the Christmas Berry, is a group of evergreen shrubs grown specifically for glossy, dark green adult foliage, white flowers and brilliant red tinted young leaves; in the spring, they unfold to give a stunning display. The best known of the photinias is Photinia Red Robin, which is often planted as a specimen shrub or as a dense, evergreen hedge. A Christmas Berry Red Robin puts on a show all year round, with white springtime flowers and new leaves that start out as a vibrant red, before darkening to a glossy green as they age. These bright colours are popular with wildlife, but due to its loose branch structure, birds are unlikely to choose the Red Robin as a nesting location (which is ironic). Christmas Berry Red Robins are an excellent choice for creating interesting hedges and borders. Mexican Fan Palm / Skyduster (Washingtonia Robusta)

Mexican Fan Palm / Skyduster (Washingtonia Robusta)

There are two main commonly cultivated Washingtonia species: Washingtonia robusta ( Mexican palm, Skyduster, Petticoat Palm) and Washingtonia filifera (California fan palm). Washingtonia filifera differs from W. robusta by width of trunk, erectness of fronds, presence of strings on frond margins, gray-green color, and cold hardiness. The two species can also hybridise. Washingtonia filifera has fan-shaped greyish green fronds 1-2m across whose tips arch down. Its margins are more stringy than Washingtonia robusta. These palm trees look really attractive when old dead fronds are allowed to accumulate against the trunk giving it a shaggy appearance. The inflorescence on stalks extending beyond foliage bears small off-white flowers which produce tiny black berries. The tree is not very hardy at H1C so shelter during normal British winter. The plant itself is prone to potential pests but no diseases. Follow the guide below on how to maintain this plant. Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest)

Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest)

A traditional conifer with bright golden-yellow foliage which grows upwards to a point. Originating from Monterey California on the west coast of America, this cypress tree has a natural resistance to salt water – making it a popular choice in seaside locations around Britain. Fast-growing, it is a versatile plant that can be used for hedging, windbreaks, or even trained into a topiary shape. The leaves of the Goldcrest Cypress hold their colour all-year-round and emit a lovely lemon scent when trimmed or cut. All conifers are known for their hardiness and resilience against the elements. We often think of them being heavily covered with snow during the winter, but they can look equally as bold and impressive against a bright blue summer sky. Conifers get their name from the "cones" that they produce – which come in all shapes and sizes. Conifer leaves are evergreen and will either be needle-shaped or scale-like.
