Profiting from Intellectual Capital - Patrick H. Sullivan - Bog - John Wiley & Sons Inc - Plusbog.dk

Profiting from Intellectual Capital - Patrick H. Sullivan - Bog - John Wiley & Sons Inc - Plusbog.dk

Tools and techniques from today''s leading intellectual capital innovators: Xerox, Dow Chemical, Hewlett-Packard, Avery Dennison, Eastman Chemical, Rockwell, and Skandia "Patrick Sullivan . . . has brought together some of the best thinkers and best thinking on the subject of intellectual capital. Anyone who hopes to profit from intellectual capital will profit from Profiting from Intellectual Capital."-Thomas A. Stewart Author of Intellectual Capital: The New Wealth of Organizations. "A comprehensive collection of the key ideas for effectively managing intellectual assets in the twenty-first century."-Hubert St. Onge Senior Vice President, Strategic Capability, Mutual Life of Canada. "The first thorough exposition of how companies manage and extract value from their intellectual capital. The discussion of ''best practices,'' as well as the high level conceptual examination of various intellectual capital issues, is an important contribution to this fast-growing field."-Baruch Lev, PhD The Philip Bardes Professor of Accounting and Finance, Stern School of Business, New York University, and Director, The Intangibles Research Project at New York University. "This is a remarkable compendium of analytic approaches to that most elusive of management goals-managing intellectual capital. It gives our ''state-of-the-practice'' knowledge a most substantial boost."-Larry Prusak Managing Principal, Knowledge Management, IBM Corporation. "Sullivan brings together strategic management and intellectual capital. The combination is powerful."-Russell L. Parr Senior Vice President, AUS Consultants. In today''s postindustrial economy, technology and knowledge-based companies are superseding traditional manufacturing enterprises at a rapid rate. But as tangible assets give way to invisible, information-centered ones, most firms still know very little about their intellectual capital and what it can do for them. While a number of books and articles have already been written about the knowledge-creation and information-sharing aspects of intellectual capital management, Profiting from Intellectual Capital takes the next step-examining how companies can develop financial benefits and extract ever more value from their intellectual capital. Divided into three sections, the book is filled with the practices and procedures of companies that are in the vanguard of ICM-Dow Chemical, Xerox, Rockwell International, Skandia, and Hewlett-Packard. The first part of the book presents essential terms and concepts, along with basic material on the principles of value extraction and a discussion of the usefulness of values in the management of intellectual capital. The two subsequent sections offer methods for IC measurement, management, and monitoring, as well as important techniques for extracting value-including such practical initiatives as creating an intellectual property database, patent trees, and more. Profiting from Intellectual Capital is essential reading for today''s forward-thinking executives, attorneys, accountants, and other professionals. Because while knowledge is power, knowledge can be profits, too.

After the Breakup - - Bog - Columbia University Press - Plusbog.dk

After the Breakup - - Bog - Columbia University Press - Plusbog.dk

On January 8, 1982, the AT&T divestiture consent decree was announced. A company with $150 billion in assets--more than General Motors, General Electric, U.S. Steel, Eastman Kodak, and Xerox combined--the country's second largest employer with over a million employees, and the nations most widely held security with over three million shareholders, was to be broken up on the first day of 1984. Many economists, government officials, people in the telecommunications industry, and media observers predicted dire consequences for "the best telephone system in the world." Years later, some experts claim the divestiture has been a great success. According to present AT&T Chairman and CEO, Robert Allen, long-distance rates have dropped, local rates have not increased as dramatically as predicted, more households are on the network, other long-distance and equipment companies now effectively compete wit hAT&T, and consumers have received more choices in products, better values, and lower prices. Others are far less positive in their evaluation of divestiture's effects. After the Breakup: Assessing the New Post-AT&T Divestiture Era describes the current state of telecommunications and how the industry has changed in the first decade of divestiture. Drawn from a major project organized by the Center for Telecommunications and Information Studies at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, this volume offers an objective account of divestiture.

Typographic Communications Today - Edward M. Gottschall - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Typographic Communications Today - Edward M. Gottschall - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

With over 900 illustrations, more than 500 in color, it is an essential reference book for graphic artists and designers and for those who, regardless of profession are involved in design choices. Suddenly, the universe of people making typographical decisions has expanded. Effective visual communication through the informed manipulation of the size and style of type, its placement on a two dimensional surface, its integration with graphic material, and the quality of its reproduction is within reach of anyone who has a computer. Typographic Communications Today places this phenomenon in historical perspective, covering the whole of 20th century graphic design. With over 900 illustrations, more than 500 in color, it is an essential reference book for graphic artists and designers and for those who, regardless of profession are involved in design choices. It clarifies the options available in this new era of print while at the same time examining the new technologies in the context of art history. The numerous quotations by first rate designers make this a treasury of good thinking about the hows and whys of typographic design. Types are displayed and grid systems employed as they are being discussed. Gottschall''s lively commentary examines the many typographic solutions designers have evolved for communication problems, beginning with the creative solutions devised by artists, painters, architects, poets and concluding with the new opportunities and challenges posed by computers and laser technology. Several chapters focus on how these technologies have changed the ways typefaces are being designed and used. Gottschall explains how terminals, output devices, networks, scanners, and software have revolutionized the world of typesetting and given graphic designers a whole new set of tools, freedoms, and restrictions. The chapter "Bits, Bytes, and Typographic Design," for example, offers a state of the art review of keyboarding on terminals, image scanning, electronic filing, and networking. Not only does Gottschall discuss the role of personal computers and word processing software, he also reviews the packages and languages available from all of the major corporate players Apple, Xerox, Wang, IBM AT&T, Interleaf, and many others and evaluates the future of such possibilities as X-ray chip etching. Edward M. Gottschall is Vice Chairman of International Typeface Corporation and Editor of U&lc magazine.

The New Beginning - Bob Sproull - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book is a sequel to the business novel, The Secret to Maximizing Profitability – A Business Novel on How to Successfully Combine the Theory of Constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma to Drive Profit Margins to New Levels . In The New Beginning , Tom Mahanan, Tires for All’s former Director of Finance, who learned how to combine the Theory of Constraints with Lean and Six Sigma, and then applied it to Tires for All, strives to take his company to levels of profitability they had never experienced before. As a reward for his work, Tom was given a permanent seat on the Board of Directors, as long as he continued his improvement work at the remaining portfolio of companies owned by the Board of Directors. Tom performed extremely well, but one day he receives a life-changing phone call from his former mentor, Bob Nelson, the man who he had worked with at Tires for All to make amazing improvements. Bob asks him to play golf with him and two others, Jeff Johnson, from Toner International, and Pete Hallwell, the CFO at Maximo Health Center Complex. Pete and Tom share a golf cart during the round and begin chatting about the work Tom had done at Tires for All and the other portfolio of companies. Pete, who works for a healthcare complex of hospitals, is so impressed with the results Tom had achieved, that he invites him to lunch the following week. Tom accepts his offer of lunch and ultimately, Tom signs a consulting agreement with Pete. Tom had provided an example from a previous improvement effort where he worked with a hospital in Chicago to improve their Emergency Department time for STEMI-type heart attack patients. In his explanation, Tom presents a variety of improvement tools which includes the integration of the Theory of Constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma. Tom then meets with his current employer and specifically, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jonathan Briggs, to let him know that he will be resigning to form his own consulting firm. Jonathan then surprises Tom by offering him a consulting agreement to improve all of their portfolio companies. The remainder of the book is all about teaching companies how to combine the Theory of Constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma to obtain optimal results. In the final two chapters, a new problem surfaces, which is the Corona Virus. Essentially, this book teaches the reader how to successfully combine and implement the Theory of Constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma to produce results that many companies only dream of having. It covers a variety of different company types including manufacturing and healthcare.
