Cartridges and Firearm Identification - Robert E. Walker - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

At a time when crime scene television shows are all the rage amongst the civilian population, knowledge of firearm forensics is of paramount importance to crime scene analysts, police detectives, and attorneys for both the prosecution and the defense. Cartridges and Firearm Identification brings together a unique, multidisciplined approach to questions that arise regarding ammunition and firearms within the context of investigation. Supplying essential practical information about firearms and ammunition in a clear, easy-to-follow format, this volume: - - Defines and depicts photographically all varieties of firearms - Presents investigative concerns of firearms evidence from the perspectives of evidence preservation and safe handling procedures - Introduces readers to the standards of measurement used to classify ammunition, including the significance of names, adjectives, and other descriptors used in conjunction with ammunition cartridges - Categorizes and identifies ammunition head stamps from cartridges produced around the world - Provides ammunition manufacturing practices for dozens of nations - The text offers a methodology for the identification of unknown firearms as well as ammunition of questioned identity. The author explains the terminology and describes each group of firearms and the aspects that identify the weaponry—including property marks, proof marks, and patent dates. Lavishly illustrated, this comprehensive reference includes case studies to support the text, making it a premier reference for all those responsible for the complicated task of investigating firearms and cartridges.

Ink, Stink Bait, Revenge, and Queen Elizabeth - Steven W. May - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

In Ink, Stink Bait, Revenge, and Queen Elizabeth , Steven W. May and Arthur F. Marotti present a recently discovered "household book" from sixteenth-century England. Its main scribe, John Hanson, was a yeoman who worked as a legal agent in rural Yorkshire. His book, a miscellaneous collection of documents that he found useful or interesting, is a rare example of a middle-class provincial anthology that contains, in addition to works from the country’s cultural center, items of local interest seldom or never disseminated nationally. Among the literary highlights of the household book are unique copies of two ballads, whose original print versions have been lost, describing Queen Elizabeth’s procession through London after the victory over the Spanish Armada; two poems attributed to Elizabeth herself; and other verse by courtly writers copied from manuscript and print sources. Of local interest is the earliest-known copy of a 126-stanza ballad about a mid-fourteenth-century West Yorkshire feud between the Eland and Beaumont families. The manuscript’s utilitarian items include a verse calendar and poetic Decalogue, model legal documents, real estate records, recipes for inks and fish baits, and instructions for catching rabbits and birds. Hanson combined both professional and recreational interests in his manuscript, including material related to his legal work with wills and real estate transactions. As May and Marotti argue in their cultural and historical interpretation of the text, Hanson’s household book is especially valuable not only for the unusual texts it preserves but also for the ways in which it demonstrates the intersection of the local and national and of popular and elite cultures in early modern England.

Forensic Microscopy - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Forensic Microscopy - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Forensic Microscopy: Truth Under the Lenses provides an overview and understanding of the various types of microscopes and their techniques employed in forensic science. The book emphasizes both the theoretical and practical aspects of microscopy to enrich the reader’s understanding of the various tools, techniques, and utility—including strengths and weaknesses—of types of microscopes in analyzing certain forms of evidence. The book begins with the history of microscopes, the basic optics for microscopy, then moves to advanced microscopies such as electron microscopes and atomic force microscopes. In addition to the various types of microscopes and how to use and best utilize them, the book looks at the analysis of specific types of evidence, including hair, fiber, fingerprint, body fluids, tool marks, ink, pollen grains, spores, diatoms, bullets, cartridges, among other evidence types. Since forensic science is an applied, hands-on discipline, the book includes both a theoretical and a practical approach to the topic. Key Features: - Addresses simple to advanced microscopy techniques for the effective analyses of trace evidence - Pairs chapters on a particular type of microscopy, explaining it thoroughly, before delving into specific usage for forensic applications - Presents theories and as well as real-world application of concepts - Provides abundant micro-photographs, including graphical representations and flow charts, to illustrate concepts clearly Forensic Microscopy serves as a helpful reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students in forensic science, forensic biology, forensic chemistry and related programs. It is also recommended for research students, academicians, technicians, industry and laboratory professionals working on trace evidence analysis.

- The Vienna Genesis (Austrian National Library, Codex Theologicus graecus 31) is a fragmentary Greek manuscript of the Book of Genesis written on purple dyed parchment with silver ink. It is assumed that the book was created in the first half of the 6th century in the Near East. 24 folios with 48 miniatures have survived and have been stored at the Austrian National Library since 1664. The Vienna Genesis is famous for its rich cycle of biblical illuminations. The silver ink´s degradation, which has resulted in extensive damage to the parchment, was already observed in the 17th century. In a three-year research project the parchment, the silver inks, the pigments and dyes were investigated. The detailed material analysis formed the base for conservation and preservation of the manuscript. - The book describes the different studies of the project and their results: - - How was parchment made in Late Antiquity? - How was parchment dyed purple? - What is the purple dye of the Vienna Genesis? - What is the composition of the silver ink and what are the causes of the severe damage? - Which pigments were used by the different painters? - How can the Vienna Genesis be best conserved for the future? -
