Pterocarya Fraxinifolia Caucasian Wingnut Caucasian Walnut

Pterocarya Fraxinifolia Caucasian Wingnut Caucasian Walnut

The Caucasian Wingnut tree, botanically known as Pterocarya Fraxinifolia, is a large, fast growing deciduous tree suitable for big spaces. It is native to Eastern Turkey and Iran but was introduced to Britain in the 1780s, taking to the climate and growing conditions well.In spring the Caucasian Wingnut tree buds out its mid-green pinnate leaves which are exceedingly large - sometimes measuring up to 60cms in length with 19-21 pointed leaves each measuring 15cms. These leaves often cause confusion with Ash trees as they are the same shape, however Caucasian Wingnut is actually a member of the walnut family. In late spring small green flowers in hanging racemes of 50cms long attract pollinators in an unusually large display. These small flowers develop into the wingnut seeds that are loved by children as they abundantly helicopter to the ground in early autumn along with its rich yellow foliage. During winter the fissured bark and strong branching framework adds interest and texture to an empty garden. Often wingnut seeds remain on the tree, draping through its branches and swaying in the winter winds.Height and spread of Pterocarya FraxinifoliaThis is a large tree that will reach 17-22 metres in height and spread over 8 within 20-50 years depending on soil conditions. It needs room to spread and is most suitable for larger, open spaces. How Hardy Is Pterocarya FraxinifoliaCaucasian Wingnut is hardy throughout the UK down to sub-zero temperature s. It will tolerate temporary flooding and exposed conditions too.How To Use Pterocarya FraxinifoliaThis is a large tree, so it’s important to make sure you have sufficient room. If you have  enough space it’s the perfect tree to lie beneath on a hot sunny day looking up at its swaying foliage. How To Care For Pterocarya FraxinifoliaPterocarya Fraxinifolia likes moist, well drained soil best but it will grow in most conditions including clay, sand, loams of any pH. It will grow in sheltered and exposed areas, but as the tree becomes established you will need to stake it firmly against rocking winds. Young specimens need regular watering and mulching too. No pruning is required, but you can cut out dead or crossed branches in winter. Some suckers may appear in spring, and these can be cut back easily if you don’t want them.Pterocarya Fraxinifolia is not often spotted in UK gardens but its unusual foliage, flowers and fruits make it highly desirable if you have room. Larger gardens in need of a focal point can’t go wrong with the quirky and low maintenance Pterocarya Fraxinifolia.

Ulmus Glabra Wych Elm Trees for Sale UK Mature Ulmus Glabra

Ulmus Glabra Wych Elm Trees for Sale UK Mature Ulmus Glabra

Ulmus Glabra, more commonly known as Wych Elm, is a large, deciduous tree appreciated for its lush foliage and interesting seeds in the autumn. Its impressive size and attractive appearance make it a good choice for large gardens, especially as a specimen, shade, or lawn tree. The seeds set in the centre of the fruits are larger than the English Elm (Ulmus Minor).Early in the spring, insignificant purplish-red flowers appear before the foliage unfolds. The blossoms make way for samaras or helicopters, which are seeds encased in papery wings. The foliage of the tree is medium green, consisting of broad, ovoid, serrated leaves, that turn to yellow in the autumn.Easy to grow and to care for, Wych Elm grows in any soil, as long as it is moist but well drained. For best results, choose deep, rich loamy soils. When it comes to location, this robust tree prefers full sun, but it will tolerate some light dappled shade. Adaptable and versatile, this cultivar is not bothered by wet or dry conditions, and will not mind urban pollution, which is why it is often chosen for an avenue or street tree.Although more often associated with Scotland and Wales, mature, established Ulmus Glabra trees can be found throughout England. This native cultivar is fully hardy in the United Kingdom and will survive low winter temperatures and strong frosts. There are some concerns about the devastating effect Dutch Elm Disease used to have on the species during the 1960s. However the situation has improved since then. This disease has been in decline all over Europe as many naturally resistant Elms come to the fore. Increasingly newly planted trees appear to avoid the disease. Another reassurance that your tree will stay healthy is knowing that the affected specimens were never younger than 20 years old, as this disease only appeared in more mature trees.Long-lived, and with an average growth rate, Wych Elm can reach an eventual height of 40 metres. Stately and grand, this tree requires a lot of space to fully develop, which is why it is recommended for large gardens only. The lovely foliage and a splendid, branching habit, make this ornamental tree ideally suited for adding interest to generously sized lawns. Elegant and impressive in any landscape, Ulmus Glabra could be grown as a focus of interest in a garden, especially if underplanted with low-growing, flowering shrubs for a showier display. It makes a good shade tree because of its dense, rich canopy.Make sure to take a look at our collection of large and mature trees, as well as our selection of deciduous trees.

Morus Nigra Tree or Black Mulberry Tree for Sale Online UK

Morus Nigra Tree or Black Mulberry Tree for Sale Online UK

The Morus Nigra Tree or the Black Mulberry, is an attractive, deciduous tree which can also be managed as a shrub. Its origins are in South Western Asia. Originally brought to Britain by the Romans, it was soon widely imported by James I who was looking to establish a silk industry. Unfortunately, the intended silk worm only feeds on the White Mulberry, Morus Alba. Its legacy as old Black Mulberry remains in historic landscapes and gardens throughout Britain. The Morus Nigra Tree is characterised by very bright green leaves, heart shaped, with a serrated looking edge making it a unique decorative addition. The gnarly bark gives even younger trees an old and historic appearance. The fruits emerge throughout the summer time, ripening to a deep purple in colour and loganberry-like in appearance. When mature, the Black Mulberry has a spreading, rounded shape giving it wide appeal in landscape architecture. The edible fruit of this tree has a unique rich flavour.  Actual fruiting may not begin until 8-9 years after planting. Harvest season for the fruit is over a relatively short window of time between August and September. This tree or shrub will tolerate most soil conditions, preferring a lighter well drained soil.  Moisture is critical in the first few years of establishment. It is an extremely long lived plant which will spread almost as wide as it grows tall. It is a great addition to a garden, bringing not only a beautiful plant but a conversation piece that includes its deep history. The Black Mulberry Tree is also suited to vertical gardens along walls and fences if managed and trained properly.Growing to a mature height between 3-7m and as wide as 10m, Morus Nigra prefers an open and sunny area. It is very hardy across the UK and is generally easy to grow. Training is important, so as to create a well-formed tree more quickly. Leave plenty of room for it to spread, usually 5-10m in diameter for the tree to develop. They prefer good fertility and moisture in a light and well drained texture. Staking as a tree will prevent wind-rock and lead to good roots.Mulberries can be grown in containers if managed well with careful watering, the use of a good loam-based compost blend, and repotting to slightly larger containers each year.Fertilizer applied in late winter, followed by a mulch rich in organic matter in the spring will optimize growth, flower set, and fruiting. In the open garden, grow and train formative pruning as a standard or half-standard tree.  Prune when fully dormant; about a month after leaves have fallen.

Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standard Tree. Evergreen Japanese Privet Standard Tree. Evergreen Screening Trees

Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standard Tree. Evergreen Japanese Privet Standard Tree. Evergreen Screening Trees

This is a Japanese Privet Tree (Latin Name: Ligustrum Japonicum) trained in a 'standard' tree shape - meaning it has a thick crown of foliage on a long clear stem. Ligustrum Japonicum is also known as Evergreen Privet or Wax Leafed Privet. Originating from Japan and Korea, this tall Ligustrum japonicum full standard tree has a thick covering of shiny, dark green leaves all year round, making it an excellent evergreen screening plant. The leaves are somewhat pear-shaped with a pointed end. They tend to measure 5 to 10 centimeters long and 2.5 to 5 centimeters wide. The top side of the leaf is darker than the underside and sports five or six raised veins that stand out in stark contrast to the rest of the leaf. Variegated varieties of the Ligustrum Japonicum sport lovely leaves that are a marbled mix of dark green and cream colours. Because of its tall elegant trunk, these mature evergreen trees work particularly well when used as stilted hedging for above the fence line screening. These Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standards have been shaped over time to have a crown of evergreen foliage above a clear straight stem of at least 190 cm from the pot to the base of the crown (depending on which you select). White flower panicles appear in the spring. Each panicle measures about 12 to 20 centimeters in length. The clusters of blossoms have a sweet, pleasing fragrance. After flowering, green berries appear that ripen to a shiney black colouration during late summer. The dark berries tend to persist on the tree into the winter months and add visual interest. Songbirds love dining on the berries and they are an invaluable food source during the early winter months when berries are often scarce. Handy Tips: Trim Ligustrum Japonicum to shape in late winter - if you clip during the late summer you will lose the flowers and the berries. As the tree ages, it tends to develop an open form. Many people prune the tree up to create a bonsai-like appearance. The tree's rapid growth rate makes it a favourite for creating topiary specimens. Although, the tree tolerates pruning well, it does not require it. When left to grow naturally, the Ligustrum japonicum develops a multi-stemmed form. Ligustrum Japonicum is exceptionally hardy and naturalizes well in areas with mild winters. It requires very little care to thrive. The Ligustrum japanicum grows well in full sun or partial shade. It is not overly picky about soil type. Once established, it can withstand periods of drought.  We also have mature Ligustrum Japonicum variegated in a full standard shape. Max Height 6m Approx.

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor - The White Pine or White FirA beautiful conifer tree, the Abies Concolor tree, often known as the White Fir Tree or Concolor Fir has silvery blue glaucous foliage and is native to the mountains of western North America. It gets its name White Fir from the white colour of its bark. It has a classic Christmas tree shape and indeed the Concolor Fir is often used as a Christmas tree in America.Abies Concolor will grow steadily into a pyramid shape reaching 25 metres in height over ten to twenty years but it can be happily pruned at any height you require. Colour and height are the main reasons a gardener will choose a White Fir Tree. The Abies Concolor’s needles are a silvery-blue glaucous shade complemented by the white bark from which it draws its name. These colours are an interesting twist on the standard green fir tree.Branches fall naturally into regular horizontal fan arrangements and six to 12 centimetre sized cones develop in autumn. At first these are yellow or a light purple shade, later ripening into the traditional brown cones that release winged seeds.White Fir Trees are fully hardy throughout the UK. They are able to withstand heat as well as cold temperatures with ease if their roots are kept from waterlogged conditions.Abies Concolor make good specimen trees when they are planted out individually. In the winter months they can be decorated with outdoor lights for a traditional Christmas effect, or you can try growing one in a container to restrict its size and move it indoors for a short while. A living Christmas tree will happily move back outdoors after the festive season if it is watered well and kept away from radiators.Abies Concolor or the Concolor Fir can be used as a hedge or evergreen screening or ornamentally in a garden that needs some winter interest. Large specimens are good for landscaping designs often fulfilling both a practical and ornamental role at the same time.Large free-growing trees can reach a height of 25m but they can be kept at a manageable height by cutting the leader branch. There is no need to prune a Concolor fir other than to restrict its height because they retain a conical shape as they grow, however, keeping your white fir tree shorter will encourage bushiness.White Fir Trees perform best in rich well-drained soils that are slightly acidic but they will grow in most conditions provided the soil is not heavy clay. They appreciate full sun and mulch around their roots in spring time.Fir trees are not just for Christmas because they make interesting architectural shapes in a garden, create wildlife habitats and will boost your outdoor space with year round colour. It’s worth considering a beautiful white fir tree if you need to fill a large space or want to landscape a lengthy piece of lawn.

Acer Negundo Box Elder Tree Mature Trees for Sale Online UK

Acer Negundo Box Elder Tree Mature Trees for Sale Online UK

Acer Negundo Box Elder TreeThe Acer Negundo, commonly called the Box Elder tree, is a type of maple tree. It is exceptionally hardy and tough. Box Elder trees often grow where other trees fail such as in bottomlands and areas that frequently flood. It is native to much of the United States and commonly found growing prolifically along streambanks and around other bodies of water. The Box Elder Tree is a popular, fast growing bushy headed mid to large sized deciduous tree. We sell these specimens as mature trees. The foliage of the Acer Negundo features pinnate leaves that have five to nine leaflets. Each leaflet measures up to 10 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width. The top sides of the leaves are a bright green and the undersides are a shade lighter. The margins of the leaves are slightly serrated. The new growth shoots of the Box Elder are ornamental and appear a bright, mint green. They often also feature a light white, purple, or pink coating when young. In the early spring, nondescript flowers appear that droop in racemes that measure up to 20 centimeters in length. Following flowering, seeds develop. The seeds are slender samaras that measure about 2 centimeters in length and grow in clusters. Many people think that the clusters of seeds resemble a bunch of keys hanging on a key ring. Only female trees produce the seed clusters. During the autumn months, the seeds provide visual interest until they drop from the tree. The tree's autumn colours are either bright yellow in areas with cold winters or a more bronze-orange in regions with mild winters. The Box Elder tree grows rapidly to a height of almost 25 metres with a canopy width of equal proportion which makes it an ideal shade choice. It is also commonly used in shelterbelts or to stabilize flood-prone areas such as along rivers. The diameter of the Acer Negundo’s trunk is relatively slender and rarely exceeds 50 centimeters in diameter. These trees are sold root-balled with a multi-stem shape or form. The several trunks can form a virtually impenetrable barrier when fully grown.Plant the Box Elder in full sun for best growth. Ideally, it should receive at least six hours of sun or more per day. Although this tree is stalwart and succeeds where very few other trees will survive, it still requires good care to establish a strong root system. It should be planted in an area that provides it with plenty of room to grow to its full potential. If you are seeking a tenacious tree that adapts to a variety of situations, then look no further than the Acer Negundo. Its rapid growth and ability to tolerate adverse conditions makes it a perfect low maintenance shade tree choice. See also Acer Negundo Kelly's Gold and Acer Negundo Flamingo.

As Betula Papyrifera matures, the white bark will develop black markings which add to the appeal. Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut TreeAesculus Hippocastanum, more commonly known as Common Horse Chestnut, is widely recognised as the conker tree. It is native to the Balkans, but has become well-established in the UK since its introduction in the late 16th century. The Horse Chestnut is named for the horse-shoe shaped scar its fallen leaves make on the twig. In turn this led to the belief that ground up conkers could relieve respiratory problems in horses. Smooth dark brown conkers are not the sole reason to choose this stunning deciduous tree because it also has beautiful spring flowers which are some of the most ornamental in late spring to early summer.  In May to June creamy-white flowers burst through in upright panicles with each individual flower containing up to five fringed petals that gradually mature into a pinky-red at the base. In September, if the flowers are pollinated, they develop into the green-spiked casings that contain its fruit – the legendary conker. Throughout the summer the Common Horse Chesnut has a broad canopy of large, easily recognisable palmate leaves that hang from a central stem. The leaves are grouped into five to seven fingered ‘palms’ which turn yellow-brown in autumn and begin to fall as the temperatures change. Autumnal leaf fall leaves behind a solid structural framework in winter.Height and Spread of Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a large tree and really only suitable for a large garden. It can reach heights of 30 metres and spread over eight metres. How Hardy Is Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a fully hardy tree in all of the UK, it can withstand sub zero temperatures, some drought and exposed locations. How To Use Aesculus HippocastanumThe Aesculus Hippocastanum needs plenty of room to grow, so it is best suited to large gardens as a specimen in the lawn. These specific trees have been trained as multi-stemmed with several upright branches rather than one main leader. This gives more a wild and natural appearance making it suitable for wildlife and informal gardens. In summer the dense foliage provides privacy and noise reduction, but it not suitable for under planting because the foliage unfurls early in the year and cuts out light. It goes without saying that the Horse Chestnut is a great tree for children who universally love collecting and playing with conkers that fall in late summer to autumn. How To Care For Aesculus HippocastanumLittle care is needed by this tough and beautiful tree, it happily tolerates all soils and does not require pruning, although you can remove the lower branches to let in light as it matures. Your Common Horse Chestnut will be delivered root-balled ready for immediate planting. New specimens will require water until they are established, and in early spring a thick layer of mulch around the base will boost its health and vitality. If you’re looking for an instantly recognisable low maintenance tree with beautiful flowers the Aesculus Hippocastanum is a great choice – it is one of the most floral and attractive trees and produces family-friendly conkers.
