Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady Smoke Bush. Cotinus Young Lady

Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady Smoke Bush. Cotinus Young Lady

Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady, the Young Lady Smoke Bush or Cotinus Young Lady, is a prolifically blooming variety of smoke bush which will enliven your landscape all summer long! This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is perfect for gardens all across the UK.A deciduous dwarf cultivar recently developed in Holland by Hendrik Kolster, Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady packs a big punch in a small package! The rounded bright green leaves emerge in spring, along with 20 cm long erect panicles of small yellow flowers, which are notable once the flowers are spent and the long, billowing hairs develop on the flower stalks. Young Lady Smoke Bush is especially noted for the quantity of blooms produced; these cover the plant in a salmon-pink haze all summer long, set off by the emerald-green foliage beneath. The leaves then turn bright scarlet-orange in autumn, adding another season of garden beauty. Hardy throughout most of the UK, Young Lady Smoke Bush will grow to a mature height and spread of 1-1.5 metres in 5 to 10 years. Little or no pruning is required to maintain its small size and attractive natural form. Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady will do well in any well-drained soil in an exposed or sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. Once established it can tolerate drought. Highly tolerant of urban pollution, Young Lady Smoke Bush makes a great choice for small city spaces, and will also do well in coastal regions because of its tolerance for salt. Deer do not like it and will avoid it! It is mostly disease and pest free, making it an ideal low-maintenance shrub with a big impact. The small size and long season of interest of Young Lady Smoke Bush make it a good choice for small city gardens where every plant needs to work hard. It is an excellent candidate for balcony or roof terrace planting, where its haze of smokey pink blooms will delight all summer long and its autumn foliage show will brighten up the space. A specimen plant of Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady as a focal point in a small lawn or as part of a mixed border will be a landscape stand-out. On a larger property, Cotinus Young Lady planted as a hedge will add considerable interest. The dwarf size of Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady makes this new Smoke Bush cultivar particularly useful. Able to be tucked into smaller spaces and with a magnificent summer blooming season, it will fit right into your garden plans!

Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain. White Flowering Spiraea

Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain. White Flowering Spiraea

Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain is a lovely new cultivar of the popular flowering Spiraea shrub which will delight with both its striking gold foliage and beautiful spring flowers. The Vanhoutte Spiraea has been grown in the UK for more than a century, and this new cultivar Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain has some distinctive and beautiful characteristics. Its arching stems are covered with leaves which start as a bright lime green when they first emerge, changing to gold from summer to autumn, complemented by masses of dense white clusters of flowers in May and June which weigh down the branches with their abundance. Hardy throughout most of the UK, Spiraea Gold Fountain will grow to a height and spread of 1.5 metres after 5 to 10 years. Like all spiraeas, it will do best if pruned regularly. After flowering, remove all dead or damaged stems, and then cut a third of the stems down to the base to maintain vigorous new growth. Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain will thrive if planted in fertile, moist, well-drained sand, loam, or chalk soil. While it will tolerate partial shade, it will flower more profusely and have brighter leaf colour in full sun. It will do well in a sheltered or exposed position, and is suited to coastal locations. While other varieties of Spiraea are unremarkable once they have finished blooming, Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain is a season-long star performer with its golden leaves. This makes it a great choice for a specimen planting in a mixed border, or as a foundation planting next to your house. One planted in your lawn will grow to be a stunning focal point. It also can be part of a mixed hedge, or you could plant a row of Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain to provide a bright highlight throughout the spring, summer and autumn. In a country setting, Spiraea Gold Fountain can also be used as ground cover on a slope or steep bank where little else will grow.  Spiraea Vanhouttei Gold Fountain will get your garden off to an early start in the spring as its leaves emerge, followed by the extravagant display of flowers in mid-spring, before settling down to provide a golden highlight throughout the summer and autumn. This new cultivar will grow to be a favourite in your garden!

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom is a low growing evergreen useful for low hedges and as ornamental shrubs.  Beautiful pink flowers resembling apple blossom in late summer / autumn months. It produces candy pink lush flowers between summer and autumn. The flowers resemble the shape of a tube with a white centre surrounded by deep green, small, and glossy leaves. With its sturdy stems, the plant grows gracefully forming a bushy and dense shrub. It can be planted alongside other perennials and shrubs. It can also be planted as a hedge in coastal climates to act as a windbreaker. Escallonia Apple Blossom grows exceptionally well in sunny spots. To plant it, dig a deep, large hole that can accommodate the plant’s root ball. Without disturbing the soil around the roots, take the plant out of its pot and place it at the bottom of the hole ensuring the plant’s crown is level with the ground. The roots need to be in direct contact with the soil while sitting at the same depth as it was in the container. Cover the hole with soil and gently firm it in before pouring water to allow the soil to settle around the roots. This plant is easy to care for and requires little maintenance. Mulch the plant during summer and remove dead blooms to encourage the plant to flower again.Water the plant regularly during the first weeks of planting and during summer. However, do not over water because as the plant continues to grow the roots go further down in search of moisture. Like other evergreens, Escallonia apple blossom requires pruning to maintain the shape of the plant. This plant can grow to four feet tall and is perfect for a small garden. The plant thrives in an open and sunny climate and works well with roses and other shrubs. In addition, it does well in acidic or mildly alkaline well-drained soil. The plant is resistant to salt spray, drought and wind, but does not do well in extremely cold and dry environments. Remove dead or damaged stems from the plant during early spring before the onset of fresh growth and then prune the plant. Low maintenance make Escallonia apple blossom ideal as a foundation or wall plant. The best time to plant it is during spring so that it has enough time to settle before winter. We ship Escallonia apple blossom plants throughout the UK and Ireland.

Phoenix Canariensis Canary Island Date Palm for Sale Online

Phoenix Canariensis Canary Island Date Palm for Sale Online

The Phoenix Canariensis, or Canary Island Date Palm, can bring a tropical feel to your UK garden! While it is only winter-hardy in the mildest parts of the UK, it is well-suited to container growing. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and so is a guaranteed winner for Southern UK gardeners! As its name makes clear, the Canary Island Palm is native to the Canary Islands, but is now grown all over the temperate regions of the world. It has a large, round crown of dark green leaves, deeply divided and up to 6 metres in length, have very sharp spines at their base. The thick trunk of a Canary Island Date Palm develops an attractive diamond cross-hatched pattern as the tree matures. Phoenix Canariensis will survive outside year-round in the mildest parts of the UK in the south and south-west, and somewhat farther north in a sheltered location if wrapped with fleece in the winter. It is not reliably winter-hardy below -8° C, and will not tolerate long periods of freezing weather in soggy soil. Where it will thrive, it can grow to a height of 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 20 to 50 years. The tallest in the UK is in the Isles of Scilly and has reached 16 metres in height.  Canary Island Date Palm will stay much smaller if restricted to a container and grown inside a conservatory. Prune off dead leaves as needed, but otherwise it will not need any pruning. If you are planting your Canary Island Palm outside, choose a sheltered spot with an east or south facing aspect, in partial shade. It will do best in well-drained, loam soil with an acid to neutral ph. If planting in a container, use a loam-based potting soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep it watered but do not let it stand in water. Apply fertilizer to the soil surface in spring. Planted in the middle of a lawn, your Phoenix Canariensis will quickly become a focal point in your landscape. On a larger property, a grouping of them would be a stunning addition to the landscape. A Canary Island Palm grown in a container would make an exotic and attractive addition to a sheltered roof terrace, large balcony, or patio, with the option of moving it inside to a sunny spot in winter. Whether planted in the ground or a container, a long-lived Phoenix Canariensis will add a tropical flair to your garden for years to come and is an ideal addition to a sheltered Mediterranean style garden.

Camellia Japonica Eugenia de Montijo Red Flowering Camellia

Camellia Japonica Eugenia de Montijo Red Flowering Camellia

Camellia Japonica Eugenia de MontijoCamellia Eugenia de Montijo is an evergreen winter flowering camellia with bright red double flowers. Camellia Japonica originates from Japan, China Taiwan and South Korea and counts for over 90% of the world’s camellias. Selections from the original plants collected from the wild over hundreds of years of breeding have produced a wealth of varieties with varying degrees of hardiness and a full range of colour and form. Camellia Eugenia de Montijo is an example of a Galician cultivar from the Northern Spanish province  where it is a very well-know variety, perhaps less well known in the UK. Eugenia de Montijo is named after Napoleon III’s Grenada-born wife who had flaming red hair. This camelia has glossy green foliage and an upright growth habit. The leaves are mid-sized oval and typical of camellias. In late winter and early spring the medium-large blooms appear in double red rosettes and last many weeks. Throughout the summer Camellia Eugenia de Montijo grows new foliage and develops buds ready for the coming colder months. Camellia Eugenia de Montijo brightens a dull winter garden with its bright red flowers at a time when there’s little else about. It makes the perfect Christmas gift for gardeners as so many plants are not in flower at this time of year.Height And Spread of Camellia Japonica Eugenia de MontijoCamellia Eugenia de Montijo will reach a maximum height of 3 metres tall by 2 metres wide. How Hardy Is Camellia Japonica Eugenia de MontijoCamellia Eugenia de Montijo is UK winter hardy if its roots are well drained. It is originally a woodland plant and appreciates the shelter of taller trees. How To Use Camellia Japonica Eugenia de MontijoThis camellia looks good at the back of a shady mixed border and will grow on a slope as it likes well drained soil. It’s particularly suitable for low maintenance gardens, wildlife spaces for its early blooming flowers, and sheltered woodland gardens. You can grow Camellia Eugenia de Montijo in a container as a specimen bush if the container is very large and well-watered, but ensure the roots do not dry out. How To Care For Camellia Japonica Eugenia de MontijoCamellias thrive in acidic soil and do not like chalk. If the soil is too chalky their leaves will turn yellow. Prepare the planting hole with plenty of acid-based compost and top-dress it each year with an acidic mulch such as pine or bracken compost. If you have chalky soil its best to grow it in a container with ericaceous compost. Camellias need dappled light, prefer shelter, and enjoy moist but well-drained soil. Be careful not to bury the stem of Camellia Eugenia de Montijo in the planting hole as it does best in shallow depths. There’s no need to prune camellias but you can remove dead or diseased branches after the flowers are spent. Mulch well with ericaceous compost and water until established.

You will find it an excellent background or hedging shrub in a large or small garden.Introduced from China in 1900, this large-leaved viburnum is a popular variety that grows bigger than other viburnums. While it will do best in fertile, moist, well-drained, loamy soil, it will also tolerate clay, sand, or chalk, and acid, alkaline, or neutral ph. Viburnum rhytidophyllum will also grow in wet soil, making it a good choice for a damp spot where many other plants would not thrive. This undemanding, reliable shrub works well in a mixed border as a background planting for a procession of more showy plants as the seasons change. While the spring flowers and autumn and winter berries give some visual interest, it is as a year-round foliage plant and garden screen that Viburnum rhytidophyllum is most valued. Plant a row of Leatherleaf viburnum as a hedge, where its evergreen leaves and considerable height will give you a living garden wall. Magnolia Blue Opal Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal for Sale UK

Magnolia Blue Opal Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal for Sale UK

Magnolia Blue OpalThe Blue Opal Magnolia is an unusual deciduous tree that’s rarely found in UK gardens. It produces blue-hued buds and blue-yellow blooms in spring on a compact crown. Magnolia Blue Opal’s full botanical name is Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal. Acuminata Magnolias originate from the eastern United States but they do very well in the UK.Opal is an unusual cultivar with striking blue-green buds that appear in spring. They are large and hard to miss standing approximately 4-5 cms tall on the ends of its branches. These unusual blue buds mature to dark yellow flowers with blue-green outer petals. They open into ten centimetre wide cup-shaped blooms in late spring. When pollinated these flowers ripen into cucumber shaped fruits which give the tree its common name the Cucumber Tree.As flowers begin to fall, large dark-green ovate leaves emerge for the summer and early autumn months. The foliage of Magnolia Blue Opal gives good autumn colour compared to other magnolias before it falls for winter.Height and Spread of Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia starts as a compact shrub that slowly matures into a tree. It’s maximum height of 15 metres and spread of 8 metres is only reached after several decades of growth. This makes it suitable for all sized gardens including compact urban spaces. How Hardy Is Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia is hardy throughout the UK as it can survive sub-zero temperatures, but it should be planted in a well-drained area that’s sheltered from frost and strong winds. Magnolias may not flower in exposed sites of the northern UK.How To Use Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia is a specimen tree you’ll rarely spot here. If a late frost is forecast cover Blue Opal with fleece to protect the new buds.Magnolia Blue Opal likes consistently moist but not waterlogged soil so give yours plenty of water in dry spells to ensure it develops new buds. Blue Opal doesn’t grow well in containers or enjoy being transplanted. Pruning isn’t necessary as Magnolia Blue Opal naturally holds a graceful shape as it grows, but you can remove crossed or damaged branches when the fruits have fallen and the tree is in full leaf.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne False Cypress Ivonne Tree

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne False Cypress Ivonne Tree

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana ‘Ivonne’ (or Yvonne) is a medium sized, hardy evergreen conifer that has an impressive conical form and signature golden yellow foliage, particularly in winter. Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana (Lawson's Cypress or False Cypress) is the UK’s most popular garden conifer. The variety Ivonne (sometimes referred to as Yvonne) is a recent, disease-resistant cultivar developed in Oregon State University and prized for its golden-yellow foliage.  Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne is immediately recognizable by its yellow hued leaves. It has flat, soft needles of bright yellow-green from spring to summer, changing to an almost golden colour during the winter months. As the foliage matures, the leaves become closely pressed together in flat sprays. The foliage is fragrant. Each Lawson’s Cypress Ivonne tree produces small male (white turning red) and female (blue turning green) flowers in spring / summer. The female flowers go on to develop into small, brown cones.  The growth form of False Cypress Ivonne is particularly attractive. It growths slowly with a pronounced columnar habit. It matures to a narrow, upright, compact conifer with a dense branching habit. As it ages, it becomes slightly wider at the base. If you wish to grow Lawson’s Cypress Ivonne as a tree, do not prune it as it has a naturally conical form. Coming from the West Coast of the United States, Lawson’s Cypress Yvonne prefers full sun but it will also grow quite happily in partial shade. It will grow in any well-drained soil but it does have a preference for lightly acidic soil. While it is hardy, it is best not to plant it in a very exposed spot as it foliage won’t look at its best. Neither does it like to be waterlogged.  Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne is grown widely in the UK as an ornamental tree. Use it for adding an elegant burst of golden-yellow to the garden. It is helpful to wildlife as the dense evergreen foliage provides shelter for nesting birds in late winter /early spring. Thanks to its dense growth habit and its tolerance of pruning, Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne can be used for topiary - for example Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne spirals and Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne Pom Pom. The Chamaecyparis family of conifers is related to the Cypress (Cupressaceae) family. It is sometimes referred to as False Cypress, as opposed to ‘true’ Cypress which is Cupressus Leylandii. It originates from California and was first introduced to Britain in the 1850s as seeds sent to Lawson’s nursery in Edinburgh, hence the name. Today Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana, according to Kew gardens, is one of the most popular garden trees in the UK and there are many ornamental cultivars available including the blue Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Columnaris.
