Albizia julibrissin Ombrella Tree or Silk Tree Ombrella UK

Albizia julibrissin Ombrella Tree or Silk Tree Ombrella UK

Albizia julibrissin Ombrella Tree or the Silk Tree is a showy deciduous tree with a broad spreading crown. The Silk Tree doesn’t get very large staying between 2-6 metres tall making it ideal for smaller gardens. Albizia julibrissin Ombrella has beautiful light green leaves that resemble ferns or feathers in their shape and are between 20-45 cm in length. It has gorgeous flowers that look like sprays of pink silk threads and are sometimes white or yellowish in the centre. The Silk Tree blooms from July to September and often attracts bees and butterflies to the garden with its colourful, aromatic blossoms. Each night the Silk Tree’s flowers close and then re-open the following morning. The Silk Tree has a grey bark and may develop vertical stripes as it matures. Albizia julibrissin Ombrella grows long, flat seeds pods that resemble peas. These pods mature from green to brown through the summer. Each pod contains several seeds. Albizia trees are native to parts of the subtropics including Iran, China, and Korea. In many areas Albizia varieties are used as forage for livestock. Unlike other Albizia species, the Albizia julibrissin Ombrella was bred to be more cold hardy and can survive winters in the UK and Ireland. It will tolerate temperatures as low as to -25° Celsius. Albizia julibrissin Ombrella also has darker leaves and bolder coloured flowers than other varieties of Albizia. The Silk Tree is wonderfully low maintenance. There’s no need to prune it. It will naturally develop an umbrella shaped crown which makes it often sought after as a shade tree. Its airy flowers and unique leaves make it an excellent focal point for any garden.Your Albizia julibrissin Ombrella tree should be planted in a warm area of the garden with full sun. It will do best in areas sheltered from strong winter winds. Another advantage of the Silk Tree is that it actually does best in poor or only slightly fertile soil, a great opportunity to bring life to an underperforming area of your garden. It also does best in soil that is neutral to alkaline. The care for Silk Trees is minimal. They benefit from occasional watering and autumn mulching. Mulch should be removed in spring as soon as it starts to warm up to allow the soil around the roots to warm up.

Halesia Carolina for Sale. Carolina Silverbell Buy Online UK

Halesia Carolina, also known as Carolina Silverbell is a small deciduous flowering tree or spreading shrub with magnificent snowbell flowers between March and May.In early spring Carolina Silverbell shoots new large leaves measuring 16cms in length. The leaves are mid-green, shaped ovate to elliptic and make the perfect background to its snow-white bell-shaped flowers with bright yellow centres that appear just before the foliage breaks through. On mature specimens the clusters of snowdrop flowers hang in profusion from many branches nodding their bells in the breeze. The blooms, which measure 2cms in diameter, have a delicate, sweet scent. Syringa Vulgaris or Common Lilac for Sale Buy Online UK

Syringa Vulgaris or Common Lilac for Sale Buy Online UK

Syringa Vulgaris or the Common Lilac, was a staple of British gardens in the 20th century but it fell out of fashion in the 1960s. These beautiful deciduous shrubs are rapidly making a comeback because of their stunning flowers and easy growth habit. Originally introduced as far back as the 16th century, Common Lilac is today very much a heritage plant back in fashion. The vast range of garden lilacs originated from this plant. In spring Common Lilac sprouts fresh new light-green foliage. These oval leaves with a pointed tip measure 2-12 cms in length and remain in place until the frosts of winter, but it is during May that Common Lilac comes into its own with masses of highly-scented light purple flowers. Syringa Vulgaris blooms grow as tiny, densely packed flowers hanging down in 8-18cms panicles. Butterflies and bees love lilac as it provides nectar throughout the summer. Lilac rivals buddleja as a butterfly bush. The glorious blooms ripen into winged seeds pods measuring around 1-2 cms long, which split open in autumn and release helicopter seeds.Height and Spread of Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is a fast-growing shrub or small tree that will reach a maximum height of six metres and spread over three metres within twenty years. It can be kept smaller with regular pruning. How Hardy is Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is a very hardy shrub that will survive sub-zero UK winters if its roots are kept from waterlogged soils. How To Use Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac can be grown anywhere, but it does need some space to ensure it doesn’t crowd out less vigorous plants. As a specimen shrub or tree that’s cut back each year it is stunning, particularly older specimens that develop a twisted, gnarled rugged bark.  Common Lilac can also be used as a flowering hedge or partition to mark areas of the garden. If you want to grow Lilac in a container it’s best to choose a smaller, more compact variety such as Syringa Meyeri Palibin. How To Care For Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is very easy to grow. It prefers full sun but is happy in partial shade too, and any garden soil is suitable, including chalky soils as long as it drains well. Some people are put off lilacs because they can become bushy and leggy, but this is easily avoided with yearly pruning. In its winter dormancy cut back a third of the new branch growth. A third is enough as it flowers on last year’s wood. Annual pruning ensures a bigger, better flower display as well as containing its height.Syringa Vulgaris is a colourful and deliciously scented garden shrub that deserves more use. It is one of the easiest to grow and puts on a stunning flower display in spring.

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor - The White Pine or White FirA beautiful conifer tree, the Abies Concolor tree, often known as the White Fir Tree or Concolor Fir has silvery blue glaucous foliage and is native to the mountains of western North America. It gets its name White Fir from the white colour of its bark. It has a classic Christmas tree shape and indeed the Concolor Fir is often used as a Christmas tree in America.Abies Concolor will grow steadily into a pyramid shape reaching 25 metres in height over ten to twenty years but it can be happily pruned at any height you require. Colour and height are the main reasons a gardener will choose a White Fir Tree. The Abies Concolor’s needles are a silvery-blue glaucous shade complemented by the white bark from which it draws its name. These colours are an interesting twist on the standard green fir tree.Branches fall naturally into regular horizontal fan arrangements and six to 12 centimetre sized cones develop in autumn. At first these are yellow or a light purple shade, later ripening into the traditional brown cones that release winged seeds.White Fir Trees are fully hardy throughout the UK. They are able to withstand heat as well as cold temperatures with ease if their roots are kept from waterlogged conditions.Abies Concolor make good specimen trees when they are planted out individually. In the winter months they can be decorated with outdoor lights for a traditional Christmas effect, or you can try growing one in a container to restrict its size and move it indoors for a short while. A living Christmas tree will happily move back outdoors after the festive season if it is watered well and kept away from radiators.Abies Concolor or the Concolor Fir can be used as a hedge or evergreen screening or ornamentally in a garden that needs some winter interest. Large specimens are good for landscaping designs often fulfilling both a practical and ornamental role at the same time.Large free-growing trees can reach a height of 25m but they can be kept at a manageable height by cutting the leader branch. There is no need to prune a Concolor fir other than to restrict its height because they retain a conical shape as they grow, however, keeping your white fir tree shorter will encourage bushiness.White Fir Trees perform best in rich well-drained soils that are slightly acidic but they will grow in most conditions provided the soil is not heavy clay. They appreciate full sun and mulch around their roots in spring time.Fir trees are not just for Christmas because they make interesting architectural shapes in a garden, create wildlife habitats and will boost your outdoor space with year round colour. It’s worth considering a beautiful white fir tree if you need to fill a large space or want to landscape a lengthy piece of lawn.

Escallonia Iveyi. White Flowering Escallonia for sale UK. Escellonia Hedging

Escallonia Iveyi. White Flowering Escallonia for sale UK. Escellonia Hedging

Escallonia Iveyi or White Flowering Escallonia is an upright evergreen variety of Escallonia with white fragrant flowers. It’s a great hedging choice that’s been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit and the Perfect for Pollinators title. Escallonia Iveyi produces large dark green glossy leaves that grow thickly. In July through to September, sometimes earlier or later if the weather is mild, Escallonia is smothered in bright pure white flowers that attract all essential garden pollinators. The blooms are bell-shaped, abundant and produce a glorious sweet scent. Escallonia plants are perfect hedging shrubs, but only Escallonia Iveyi boasts clusters of pure white flowers throughout the summer. During winter the evergreen leaves can develop an attractive bronze tint. Escallonia Iveyi is a fast-growing hedging shrub best suited for larger areas as is it will reach three by three metres if left unchecked. Escallonia Iveyi is hardy across the UK and whilst it will need some pruning to control side shoots, it is very easy to care for tolerating dry spots, all soils and coastal areas once established. Escallonia Iveyi is ideal for wildlife-friendly hedging. It produces a tight, thickly leaved hedge within a few years. It also provides structure at the back of a border. It is an excellent flowering evergreen for windy coastal areas. Due to its thick habit Escallonia Iveyi can also be grown as a privacy screen or as a wind or noise protection barrier. If you find your tender perennials or vegetables suffer wind damage, try placing a few Escallonia Iveyi against prevailing winds. This technique also shelters and fragrances an outside seating area. It’s possible to mask sheds and other unsightly areas with a few well positioned Escallonia too. Plant individual specimens a foot or more apart for a rapidly growing screen. You can also grow Escallonia Iveyias as a specimen plant, pruning it back each year to maintain the desired shape. Escallonia Iveyi prefers a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil but it will grow in virtually all soils and areas. Young plants will need mulching, watering and protection from severe frosts in their first year  until firmly established. Before planting your Escallonia Iveyi, soak the roots in a bucket of water overnight. Then, dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and line it with a well rotted mulch. Stake the leader stem if the area is particular gusty. Deadheading blooms can prolong the flowering season, but it is not necessary. Cut back any unnecessary shoots in spring to maintain a good shape. Escallonia Iveyi is the perfect hedging plant and practical solution for problem areas. The fragrant flowers provide food for pollinators and the thick bush creates habitats for nesting birds. If you are looking for a vigorous privacy screen or a noise and wind barrier you will find it hard to better an Escallonia.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne False Cypress Ivonne Tree

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne False Cypress Ivonne Tree

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana ‘Ivonne’ (or Yvonne) is a medium sized, hardy evergreen conifer that has an impressive conical form and signature golden yellow foliage, particularly in winter. Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana (Lawson's Cypress or False Cypress) is the UK’s most popular garden conifer. The variety Ivonne (sometimes referred to as Yvonne) is a recent, disease-resistant cultivar developed in Oregon State University and prized for its golden-yellow foliage.  Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne is immediately recognizable by its yellow hued leaves. It has flat, soft needles of bright yellow-green from spring to summer, changing to an almost golden colour during the winter months. As the foliage matures, the leaves become closely pressed together in flat sprays. The foliage is fragrant. Each Lawson’s Cypress Ivonne tree produces small male (white turning red) and female (blue turning green) flowers in spring / summer. The female flowers go on to develop into small, brown cones.  The growth form of False Cypress Ivonne is particularly attractive. It growths slowly with a pronounced columnar habit. It matures to a narrow, upright, compact conifer with a dense branching habit. As it ages, it becomes slightly wider at the base. If you wish to grow Lawson’s Cypress Ivonne as a tree, do not prune it as it has a naturally conical form. Coming from the West Coast of the United States, Lawson’s Cypress Yvonne prefers full sun but it will also grow quite happily in partial shade. It will grow in any well-drained soil but it does have a preference for lightly acidic soil. While it is hardy, it is best not to plant it in a very exposed spot as it foliage won’t look at its best. Neither does it like to be waterlogged.  Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne is grown widely in the UK as an ornamental tree. Use it for adding an elegant burst of golden-yellow to the garden. It is helpful to wildlife as the dense evergreen foliage provides shelter for nesting birds in late winter /early spring. Thanks to its dense growth habit and its tolerance of pruning, Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne can be used for topiary - for example Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne spirals and Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Ivonne Pom Pom. The Chamaecyparis family of conifers is related to the Cypress (Cupressaceae) family. It is sometimes referred to as False Cypress, as opposed to ‘true’ Cypress which is Cupressus Leylandii. It originates from California and was first introduced to Britain in the 1850s as seeds sent to Lawson’s nursery in Edinburgh, hence the name. Today Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana, according to Kew gardens, is one of the most popular garden trees in the UK and there are many ornamental cultivars available including the blue Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Columnaris.

After planting, water thoroughly and apply a layer of mulch. The biodegradable hessian sack and a wire mesh protecting the root system should not be removed.Long-lived, Leyland Cypress Root Balls can grow as much as 1 metre in height per year.
