Full Standard Leylandii Trees To Buy Online UK. Cupressus Leylandii Standard Shape Trees.

Evergreen Standard Trees - our Cupressus Leylandii trees have been trained to grow as a full standard tree to cover over the fence panel or for above wall privacy screening. Leylandii trees are often referred to as simply Leylandii, these are fast growing evergreen conifers that are mainly used for hedging and evergreen screening.  Cupressus Leylandii trees make excellent roosting places and may also be used as nest sites for birds such as greenfinches, robins, dunnocks and wrens. We also have Leyland Cypress trees available in a golden colour - Cupressus Leyland Goldrider and the ever popular Leylandii Castlewellan GoldCupressus leylandii do need to be correctly maintained with regular trims, trimming should be done twice or three times each year to keep their shape. Leyland Cypress should not be cut back too hard ie beyond the green foliage as they do not re-shoot from old wood. So please bear in mind that they do need consistent trims each year rather than letting them go for a couple of years and cutting them back hard.Leylandii trees are still the fastest and most cost effective way of achieving a neat tall hedge or screen in the garden as they will grow up to 1m per year (2-3ft). We also recommend Thuya Plicata for Hedging and Screening View our Blog post on Using Plants for Screening

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus - although known as the Miniature Chusan Palm Tree - and often fondly referred to as WaggiesOriginating from Japan and Korea, this hardy palm is well used to surviving the typhoon season, so it copes well with exposed, windy positions. The leaves are much more rigid and compact than the very popular Trachycarpus Fortunei, also a hardy palm suited to growing outdoors in the UK. Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is one of the most beautiful of the palms that we are able to grow here in the UK and Ireland. Also known as Waggy, and Dwarf Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus has its origins in Germany, where it was named by Ludwig Winter to honour his fellow horticulturalist, Albert Wagner. As it turns out, Wagner had imported a quantity of this more compact Trachycarpus from Japan; and eventually sold his entire inventory to Mr Winter. If you are seeking an exquisite specimen to bring an exotic style to your garden, Trachycarpus wagnerianus is certainly a specimen you should be adding. The hardiest of palms grown in our region, Dwarf Chusan Palm will tolerate snow, frost, and temperatures down to -15OC. Even in the strongest winds, this cold tolerant palm will maintain its shape and appearance. Unlike many exotics, this offering is truly a low maintenance delight.Waggies will grow to 5-6 metres in ultimate height, and about 2 metres in spread (over 50 years) ; and have a slow growth habit. They prefer full sun but can do well in partial shade exposures as well.  Provide a moist, rich, and well-drained soil media of near neutral, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline pH.One of the most prominent features of Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is their small, stiff leaves, making them much tougher than the ‘standard’ and larger Trachycarpus Fortunei. Another feature of the smallish leaves is that aside from their jaunty, attractive appearance, they do make it easier to accommodate when space is at a premium. The popularity of this variety of Trachycarpus continues to grow across the UK and Ireland with its unique silhouette adding an outstanding architectural feature to your exotics. More compact than the Trachycarpus Fortunei and its markedly more hardy tolerance to our climate, this is an outstanding hardy palm to add to your garden space for this year.Paramount Plants specialises in these tropical plants that are hardy enough for the UK climate.

Betula Jacquemontii Doorenbos Himalayan Birch Doorenbos

Betula Jacquemontii Doorenbos Himalayan Birch Doorenbos

Betula Utilis Doorenbos, also called Himalayan Birch Doorenbos or Betula Utilis Jacquemontii Doorenbos, is a lovely mid-sized birch tree which will add beauty to your garden year-round with its distinctive creamy white bark! It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.Betula Utilis is native to the Himalayas, and was brought to Europe from Kashmir in the 1830’s. The cultivar Betula Utilis Doorenbos was first grown in the Netherlands in 1933, and has become a very popular landscape tree in the UK since then. In early spring, catkins up to 15 cm long emerge, followed by small, green oval leaves which cast a dappled shade through the summer months before turning yellow in autumn. It is when the leaves fall that Himalayan Birch Doorenbos takes on its starring role with its white bark that peels back to reveal a creamy orange shade beneath, that then turns a bright white in its turn. The brilliant white bark and graceful shape of Betula Utilis Doorenbos combine to make it a very desirable specimen tree with all year-round interest!Hardy in even the most severe climates, Betula Utilis Doorenbos will grow to 6 metres high by 5 metres wide in 20 years, reaching a mature height of 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 50 years. It has a naturally slender growth habit. If any pruning is required, it should be done in July and August. If desired, you can gently wash the bark for the purest white shades. Expect it to take a few years after planting for the distinctive white bark to develop.Plant Betula Utilis Doorenbos in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. It is tolerant of salt, and so can be grown in coastal regions, and is very tolerant of pollution, making it ideal for city gardens. As deer do not browse on birch, Himalayan Birch Doorenbos can be planted without special protection on country properties.Use Betula Utilis Doorenbos as a specimen tree in a small to medium-sized lawn, where it will be a pleasant foliage tree in summer and autumn before becoming a striking focal point in winter, especially with a backdrop of green conifers.Comparing Himalayan Birch Cultivars - Betula utilis Jacquemontii Doorenbos is a specific cultivar of Himalayan Birch that has creamier bark when it peels and turns ever whiter as time progresses. Its parent - Betula Utilis Jacquemontii also has a white bark but peels white not cream. Doorenbos is not to be confused with Snow Queen, which also has white rather than cream bark. Betula Utilis Jacquemontii Snow Queen is also a specific Jacquemontii cultivar and is noted for the fact that it is capable of producing the white bark even when it very young which Betula Utilis Jacquemontii and Betula Utilis Jacquemontii Doorenbos cannot do.

The leaves are bright green with cream margins, and they will stay on the tree throughout the seasons. Variegated Japanese Privet produces panicles of white flowers in late summer followed by dark berries. This is a compact tree with dense-growing foliage, making it well-suited to evergreen screening. Pleached trees with their long clear stems are highly distinctive. Camellia Japonica Adolphe Audusson. Red flowering buy UK

Camellia Japonica Adolphe Audusson. Red flowering buy UK

Camellia Japonica Adolphe Audusson - Full Standard TreeCamellia Adolphe Audusson is one of the best known of the Camellia Japonica varieties, originating from France in 1910. Renowned for good reason, Camellia Adolphe Audusson has glossy dark green foliage and spectacular blood red flowers with striking golden stamens. The flowers appear en masse, covering the entire crown of the tree and producing a magnificent display in Spring.Depending on your location the buds can start to bloom as early as February and March and the prolific blooms will continue flowering right through until May.Camellia Adolphe Audusson is hardy variety to around -15C and is a beautiful evergreen shrub, our specimens are rare full standard trees. These are trained with a clear stem and a full crown and look stunning especially when in full bloom.Camellias need to be grown in acidic soil to really thrive, if your soil is not acidic, Camellias will grow in containers using ericaceous soil. They need feeding a couple of times a year with liquid 'Camellia feed' and do need to be kept watered (not waterlogged!). In late summer to early Autumn it is very important to not let your Camellia dry out - this is the time of year when buds are forming for next year's display.Camellia Adolphe Audusson is hardy and a very reliable variety. The pretty, bright red flowers, are circa 11cm in diameter, they form as semi-double blooms with 12 petals formed in 3 rounds with a crown of golden stamens at the centre, some of these may develop as petaloid stamens. Where to plant - Camellias don't like cold, dry winds, it is best to plant in a sheltered location. We recommend avoiding an easterly aspect, the cold morning sun from the east, during the winter months, is hard for Camellias to bear. Camellias can be planted at any time of the year as long as the ground is not frosted. Best time to plant is in late Autumn when the ground is still warm from the summer. Give them a good mulch every year and carefully dead-head the flowers after blooming. Remember, Camellia Adolphe Audusson is a relatively slow growing variety so a light prune to keep in shape once a year is all that is required.

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is a compact evergreen magnolia renowned for its large showy, fragranced flowers. Evergreen and elegant, this striking cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or mixed shrub borders. Like its deciduous cousins, Magnolia Grandiflora also produces massive showy flowers but tends to do this in summer rather than spring. The cultivar ‘Maryland’ differentiates itself by rounded, compact shrub (rather than tree) shape. With all the noteworthy qualities of its close relatives, this eye-catching cultivar has a few interesting differences. The lush foliage consists of glossy, broad, elliptic leaves, but unlike most bull bay Magnolias, Maryland doesn’t have a brown underside. Instead, the large, leathery leaves are light, olive green beneath, forming a rounded, compact shrub, rather than a tree. Although the foliage differentiates this cultivar from its evergreen cousins, the blossoms are as equally stunning as those of other Magnolia cultivars. In the summer, massive creamy white flowers grace this compact shrub. Large and goblet-shaped, the blossoms have a sweet, citrusy fragrance.Tolerant of full sun to partial shade, this flowering shrub thrives in moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. When it comes to acidity, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. Apart from being highly decorative, this ornamental shrub is quite robust. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland can survive even when the temperatures drop to -20 degrees. However, to avoid potential damage from frost and biting winds, apply a layer of mulch during winter, and choose a sheltered location for planting.A cross between Magnolia Grandiflora and Magnolia Virginiana, the cultivar Maryland is quite fast growing, although it stays fairly compact even when fully mature. This evergreen shrub can grow to be 3 to 8 meters tall and 2 to 4 metres wide, which is, when compared to other Magnolia Grandiflora varieties, rather petite. With a rich, leathery foliage, elegant, compact form and clusters of aromatic blossoms, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is ideal as a focus or a specimen plant. Although this plant has a year-round interest, its graceful and sophisticated appearance is at its best in the summer, when this shrub is in full bloom. Consider planting this Magnolia variety in a mixed shrub border, either underplanted with low-growing flowering shrubs, or combined with medium-sized, evergreen bushes.See also our full range of Magnolia varieties we have available.

Prized for its profusion of scented white blossoms and compact size, this extraordinary cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen tree, both for large and small gardens.Unlike its close Styrax relatives, who sport a wide, spreading habit, Styrax japonicus Fragrant Fountain has elegant, pendulous branches. Its lush, deciduous foliage consists of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves that turn to rich hues of yellow and gold in the autumn. Even though this cultivar looks stunning throughout the seasons, it is at its best in the spring, when the flowering season starts. The large, bell-shaped, flowers are borne on drooping stems, their attractive appearance enhanced by long, pale gold stamens dangling from the centre. The blossoms are highly fragrant and have a pleasant, sweet scent.Easy to grow and to care for, Japanese Snowbell Fragrant Fountain thrives in partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It will tolerate a sunny spot in the garden, as well as sandy and clay soils. For best results, choose a sheltered location for planting, as cold, drying winds might damage the plant.Belonging to genus that is native to Asia, Styrax japonicus Fragrant Fountain can survive in areas where winter temperatures do not drop below -15 degrees, and is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. Exceptionally resilient, this variety is considered to be generally pest and disease free. Staying compact as it matures, this ornamental tree has a maximum height of 2 metres. Its size and slow growth rate make it an ideal tree for small gardens, as it does not take up too much space even when it is fully grown. When it comes to maintenance, Japanese Snowbell Fragrant Fountain will not require extensive pruning to stay in shape. Routine removal of dead, congested or damaged stems will keep the plant healthy and the habit tidy. With an elegant, weeping habit and a breath-taking display of blossoms in the spring, Styrax japonicus Fragrant Fountain creates an impressive effect in any landscape. Plant it in a mixed shrub border, where evergreen shrubs would serve as a perfect backdrop, or on its own, to be grown as a focus of interest in a garden. As it is suitable for growing in large containers, this eye-catching tree can be used to decorate patios or roof gardens.

Arbutus Andrachnoides Hybrid Strawberry Tree Evergreen Tree

Arbutus Andrachnoides Hybrid Strawberry Tree Evergreen Tree

Arbutus Andrachnoides (Hybrid Strawberry Tree) is an RHS AGM-winning evergreen strawberry tree with dark green foliage and cinnamon-red bark. It’s excellent in sheltered spots with neutral to acidic soil. Also known as Red Barked Strawberry Tree, this is a naturally occurring hybrid cross between the Grecian species Arbutus Andrachne and the native Irish Unedo, otherwise known as the Killarney Strawberry tree. This evergreen tree is smaller than Unedo with the same-sized pinky-red strawberry-like fruits. The Hybrid Strawberry Tree produces autumn to wintertime masses of small pink-white blossoms, which ripen into fruit the following autumn. This strawberry tree cross has stringy cinnamon-red bark and a rounded crown of handsome dark green foliage all year.If you’re looking for an unusual, small evergreen tree to create vertical interest, graceful Arbutus Andrachnoides is an attention-grabbing choice.Height and Spread of Arbutus AndrachnoidesFast-growing Hybrid Strawberry Tree matures faster than both its parent plants. It reaches five metres in 5-10 years. How Hardy is Arbutus AndrachnoidesThis is a hardy evergreen in freezing temperatures, but it struggles to cope with a very exposed spot where harsh, drying winds damage its foliage. In exposed areas, unedo is a better choice. How To Use for Arbutus AndrachnoidesRed Barked Strawberry Tree is a great choice for compact gardens because it only reaches five metres tall. It’s grand enough to grab attention, but slim enough that it doesn’t take over the space. Its year-round dark green foliage and wintertime white flowers bring colour to drab winter gardens.Sunny, urban courtyards through to country cottage gardens benefit from its vertical height and colour, plus birds and insects find shelter in its evergreen foliage. Late-waking bees drink its wintertime nectar and birds enjoy the fruits.Despite its name, the strawberry-like fruits are not as tasty as strawberries. How to Care for Arbutus AndrachnoidesRed Barked Strawberry Tree enjoys full sun to partial shade. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained neutral-to-acidic soil and it should thrive with little attention. Young trees benefit from a south wall that creates shelter and traps warmth.Prune it in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove dead, damaged, or crossed branches and tidy up the shape by cutting branches just above a healthy bud. Do not heavily prune it, because that reduces flowering.Water thoroughly until established and during drought spells. A thick layer of well-rotted organic matter around the roots retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and provides nutrients for a dazzling display of white blossom.

Calocedrus Decurrens. Incense Cedar Tree. White Cedar

Calocedrus Decurrens. Incense Cedar Tree. White Cedar

Calocedrus Decurrens or Incense Cedar Tree or White Cedar TreeAre you in search of an evergreen conifer tree which requires virtually zero maintenance?  Have a gander at Incense Cedar!  Also known as the White Cedar Tree, Calocedrus Decurrens is an evergreen conifer with glossy green foliage arranged on a columnar habit, but wider than some column formers such as the Italian Pencil Cypress.A member of the Cupressaceae Family, the Genus Calocedrus is known for its tiny, scale-like leaves aligned in ranks on the shoots and creating a flattened spray of foliage. They produce small, ovoid cones. Stepping into the details of C. decurrens, you’ll find a narrowly columnar habit, known for its flaking bark once established. Glossy, rich green sprays of leaves highlight this variety. Its small cones detach fairly soon after setting.Incense Cedar was first introduced to Britain in the 1850’s from the Western Region of North America, where its origins lie from the State of Oregon all the way to Baja California. Another region of origin was in Eastern Asia. The foliage of the Calocedrus Decurrens resembles Thuja but what sets it apart from most all the other conifers is its formal columnar shape. The entire plant is strongly aromatic, with virtually no issues with pests or diseases.White Cedar is very cold hardy. Known to withstand temperatures as cold as -20 C, it can grow to an ultimate height over 12 metres and a spread of 4-8 metres in the 20-50 years it takes to reach its full maturity. In its native environments, they can grow to 60 metres with a broad crown, but in the cooler climates of the UK, left on its own in an ideal location, it could reach 30 metres with a much more closely bunched, parallel shoot habit. In terms of its site preferences, the Incense Cedar Tree prefers full sun to partial shade with aspects by priority ranking South to North to West to East facing. It tolerates both exposed and sheltered positions in the landscape. It prefers well drained soils across most any combination of chalk, clay, sand, and loam. Not terribly choosey regarding pH, White Cedar will do well in slightly acid through to slightly alkaline soils. It can be grown on its own as a nice specimen tree; or align as an avenue planting for creating a low maintenance evergreen screen where space is limited. Once the tree matures, the flaking bark sets it apart as unmistakable.

Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe Dwarf London Plane Tree

Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe Dwarf London Plane Tree

Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe or Dwarf London Plane TreePlatanus Hispanica Alphens Globe, also known as the London Plane Alphens Globe or Dwarf London Plane, has all of the most desirable qualities of its parent plant, the London Plane Tree, with the additional benefit of its dwarf size, making it the perfect addition to gardens large or small! The original London Plane Tree is a cross between the Oriental Plane Tree and American Sycamore. Left to its own devices, over time it grows to an enormous size, and is notable for its attractive, mottled bark in shades of grey, olive, and cream. However, its large size makes it an impractical choice for most city gardens, and so the Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe is a welcome newcomer! The large, 20 cm wide 5-lobed green leaves of the London Plane Alphens Globe emerge later in the spring, followed by small yellow-green flowers that are not noticeable, but produce clusters of small, burr-like fruits which remain on the tree through the winter. Fully hardy throughout the UK, this grafted dwarf variety grows to a mature height of 5 metres and spread of 3 metres, making it an excellent choice for even small city gardens. Pruning is not necessary to maintain the natural rounded shape of the crown of the Dwarf London Plane, but if required it is best to prune in late winter. Plant Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe in full sun in any soil. It will do well in a variety of conditions, most notably being very tolerant of pollution, and therefore is an excellent choice of tree for small city gardens. It also tolerates salt, and is resistant to wind, making it perfect tree for coastal regions as well. It does well planted in paving or containers, increasing still further its landscaping versatility.Let the small scale of the London Plane Alphens Globe inspire you to use it in places where its sprawling parent would never fit! It is well-suited to container planting on rooftop terraces or courtyards, providing not only the beauty of its rounded crown of foliage in spring, summer, and autumn, but the appeal of its attractive mottled bark and small fruits in winter. This is easily included in a patio or gravel garden, or as a specimen plant in a small lawn. It also makes an excellent street-side tree, planted in a row along a sidewalk. If you have loved the look of the London Plane Tree but been unable to accommodate its size in your garden, Platanus Hispanica Alphens Globe is the perfect choice for you!
