Evergreen Standard Trees - our Cupressus Leylandii trees have been trained to grow as a full standard tree to cover over the fence panel or for above wall privacy screening. Leylandii trees are often referred to as simply Leylandii, these are fast growing evergreen conifers that are mainly used for hedging and evergreen screening.  Cupressus Leylandii trees make excellent roosting places and may also be used as nest sites for birds such as greenfinches, robins, dunnocks and wrens.We also have Leyland Cypress trees available in a golden colour - Cupressus Leyland Goldrider and the ever popular Leylandii Castlewellan GoldCupressus leylandii do need to be correctly maintained with regular trims, trimming should be done twice or three times each year to keep their shape. Leyland Cypress should not be cut back too hard ie beyond the green foliage as they do not re-shoot from old wood. Highly ornamental and a good deciduous shade tree, it will suit a variety of gardens!Betulus Pendula is a large tree native to the UK and much of Europe, and grows to a great size. Carpinus Betulus Pendula is a dwarf weeping cultivar which was developed in France in 1850, and can be used in smaller spaces with great success. In early spring, first the catkins emerge. Then the ovoid, bright green leaves emerge, up to 10 cm in length, covering the drooping branches, and turning first yellow and then orange for a brilliant show in autumn. In winter, the graceful, drooping form of the bare branches adds visual interest.Height & Spread:Hardy in all regions of the UK, this dwarf variety Carpinus Betulus Pendula will grow to just 3 metres high and 2 metres wide in 10 years, reaching a mature height of 3-4 metres and spread of 4-5 metres. Betula Utilis Doorenbos, also called Himalayan Birch Doorenbos or Betula Utilis Jacquemontii Doorenbos, is a lovely mid-sized birch tree which will add beauty to your garden year-round with its distinctive creamy white bark! It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.Betula Utilis is native to the Himalayas, and was brought to Europe from Kashmir in the 1830’s. The cultivar Betula Utilis Doorenbos was first grown in the Netherlands in 1933, and has become a very popular landscape tree in the UK since then. In early spring, catkins up to 15 cm long emerge, followed by small, green oval leaves which cast a dappled shade through the summer months before turning yellow in autumn. It is when the leaves fall that Himalayan Birch Doorenbos takes on its starring role with its white bark that peels back to reveal a creamy orange shade beneath, that then turns a bright white in its turn. The brilliant white bark and graceful shape of Betula Utilis Doorenbos combine to make it a very desirable specimen tree with all year-round interest!Hardy in even the most severe climates, Betula Utilis Doorenbos will grow to 6 metres high by 5 metres wide in 20 years, reaching a mature height of 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 50 years. It has a naturally slender growth habit.If any pruning is required, it should be done in July and August. If desired, you can gently wash the bark for the purest white shades. Expect it to take a few years after planting for the distinctive white bark to develop.Plant Betula Utilis Doorenbos in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. It is tolerant of salt, and so can be grown in coastal regions, and is very tolerant of pollution, making it ideal for city gardens. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides or Dawn Redwood is a rare, deciduous conifer. It is a tree with a fascinating history. Its attractive shape, unusual foliage habit and beautiful autumn colouring make it an interesting addition to the landscape. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides is closely related to the Sequoiadendron Giganteum (Giant Redwood). In the prehistoric Tertiary period it was one of the most common trees in the northern hemisphere, but was believed to have died out millions of years ago. However, in the 1940’s, a few survivors were thankfully discovered in a remote region of China and the since then, the Dawn Redwood has been introduced to the gardens and landscapes of the world. It is still considered endangered, so growing a Dawn Redwood helps to preserve the species! It is an extremely attractive large specimen tree, which is unusual in that it is a conifer that sheds its leaves. In spring and summer, the soft, pale green linear leaves turn to yellow and dramatically to vibrant reddish-brown in the autumn. The reddish-brown fibrous bark adds more visual interest.Hardy throughout the UK and Continental Europe, Metasequoia Glyptostroboides will reach 10 metres high and 5 metres wide in 20 years, and then grow to a mature height of 40+ metres and spread of 15 metres in 50 years. Dawn Redwoods will grow taller in regions where there are hot summers. No pruning is required to maintain its pyramidal crown. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides should be planted in full sun in any soil type, in an exposed or sheltered position. While they will grow happily in waterlogged soil, they will also grow well in more well-drained soil as well, but if the ground is dry they will not reach the same height. Not susceptible to pests or diseases, they are extremely low-maintenance once established. While Dawn Redwood has a low tolerance for salt, making it less suitable for coastal plantings, it is resistant to pollution, and so will do well in city locations. In country settings, it is deer resistant. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides is a big tree, much like its Giant Redwood cousin, and so is not suited to small spaces. However, in a larger garden, a Dawn Redwood will make a magnificent specimen planting as the focal point in a lawn. A row of Metasequoia Glyptostroboides lining an avenue or street would be a striking sight, as would a grouping on a larger country property.Metasequoia Glyptostroboides, low-maintenance and with beautiful foliage, is not just a magnificent tree, but also a part of ancient history!

It was first developed in Deurne, Netherlands in 1990. It is a hybrid that was created by crossing the female, Picea pungens ‘Glauca' with an unknown male Picea pungens variety. Once the cross was made, the plant Blue Spruce Diamond was grown via the use of asexual cuttings. The tree was patented in both the United States and Europe. It is now widely available for sale to gardners around the world.Since 1991, the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond has successfully retained its distinctive characteristics, making it a popular landscape tree choice for any size garden. It grows in an eye-pleasing, strong, upright fashion and creates an outstanding pyramid shape that makes it a true focal point in any landscape. It produces one main, large stem and has vigorous lateral branches. Unlike other common Blue Spruce varieties which produce a drab blue shade, the colouration of the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond is an intense and vibrant blue with strong silver overlays that lasts all year long. The Blue Diamond exhibits a moderate growth rate. It usually attains a height of 66 cm in six years and then goes on to grow to 125 cm within 12 years. Average growth rate is generally about 15 cm per year. When fully grown, the Blue Diamond is expected to reach a height of at least 3 m.  Its width growth averages 56 cm in six years and 56 cm in 12 years.  The conifer grows well in temperatures that range from 8 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. It can withstand temperatures down to minus 25 degrees Celsius with ease. Ideally, the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond should be planted in full sun for best growth. It grows well in all soil types, as long as the soil is well-draining. Best growth is normally attained in soil that is neutral to slightly acidic.  It does not tolerate excessively wet roots for an extended time period. The Blue Spruce Blue Diamond is virtually carefree once planted and established. Even periods of drought do to not adversely affect the tree’s growth. It requires no pruning to maintain its optimum pyramidal shape. However, it will tolerate a bit of trimming in the spring.
