Colloquium on Fatigue / Colloque de Fatigue / Kolloquium uber Ermudungsfestigkeit - - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG -

Upon the request of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) the Swedish National Committee for Mechanics organized a colloquium on fatigue, which was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (Kung!. Tekniska Hogskolan) in Stock holm, May 25-27, 1955. 35 lectures were delivered, principally dealing with problems of statistical and basic nature. Among the topics were to be found statis tical theory of fatigue, cumulative damage, mechanism of fatigue, me tallurgical aspects on fatigue, velocity of fatigue cracks, fatigue at elevated temperature, and fatigue at combined stresses. Lectures were going on simultaneously in two sections. Each lecturer had 15 minutes for presentation of his communication, and afterwards 15 minutes were reserved for discussion. Abstracts of the lectures were distributed about a month before the colloquium. The colloquium was attended by 149 participants from the follow ing countries: Denmark (1), Finland (2), France (5), Germany (6), Italy (2), Netherlands (2), Norway (2), Poland (2), Saar (1), Spain (3), Sweden (100), Switzerland (1), United Kingdom (10), USA (8), USSR (3), and Yugoslavia (1). A complete list of the participants will be found below. The languages of the Colloquium were English, French, German and Italian. No lectures were delivered in Italian. Also, all contributions to the discussions have been translated to one of the first three languages. Statements and opinions advanced are always those of the individual authors or participants in the discussions.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 9 contains literature published in 1973 and received before August 15, 1973; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy.

Treatment of Fractures in Children and Adolescents - - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

Treatment of Fractures in Children and Adolescents - - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

There are many textbooks on fractures in adults, but few deal with those in children and young persons. Publications on fractures in children are usually written by orthope dic surgeons who are familiar with the problems presented by the growing skeleton. The principles taught in the best known works on fractures in children by BLOUNT (1954), RETTIG (1957), CHIGOT and ESTEVE (1957), EHALT (1960), POLLEN (1973), and RANG (1974), differ from each other only slightly. The controversy which has sur rounded the treatment of fractures in adults in recent years has never extended to chi1drens'' fractures. Skillful nonoperative treatment of the latter leads to uneventful healing in the majority of cases, which cannot always be said of similar injuries in adults. "Considerable skill" is required to induce nonunion in a child, and its occur rence always results from a serious error of management. In the adult, prolonged immobilization frequently leads to muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and disturbances of the peripheral innervation and circulation. Fracture treatment by internal fixation in the manner originally described by LANE (1894), LAMBOTTE (1892, 1907, 1913), KONIG (1905, 1931), and DANIS (1932, 1949) has gained wide acceptance only in the last 15 years. Since 1958, MULLER, ALLGOWER, WIL LENEGGER, and the other members of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF) have been developing techniques and instruments for the operative treatment of fractures.

Pb Organolead Compounds - Friedo Huber - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

FoLLowing the first synthesis of an organoLead compound by Loewig in 1852, progress sLowed markedLy in organoLead chemistry. Then, the discovery of the outstanding performance of organoLead compounds as antiknock additives to automobiLe gasoline turned organoLead chemistry into one of the main areas of organometallic chemistry. Large-scaLe industriaL procedures for synthesizing tetraethyLLead and other tetraaLkyLLead compounds and entireLy new techniques, such as handling Large amounts of sodium-Lead aLLoys or eLectroLyzing Grignard soLutions, were deveLoped, and many other industriaL projects as weLL as toxicoLogicaL and environmentaL studies brought a tremendous increase of knowLedge. Therefore, a compiLation of the avaiLabLe data in organoLead chemistry seemed justified. In the present series onLy compounds containing at Least one Lead-to-carbon bond are considered; the simpLe inorganic cyanides, carbides, etc. , are excLuded. The materiaL is organized as foLLows: 1. MononucLear compounds (compounds containing onLy one Lead atom) 2. DinucLear compounds 3. OLigo-and poLynucLear compounds Within the group of mononucLear compounds the materiaL is arranged in a simiLar way as in the GmeLin voLumes of the sister eLement tin, that is: 1. 1 • Compounds containing four Pb-C bonds 1. 2 Compounds containing Pb-H bonds 1. 3 Compounds containing bonds between Lead and group 17 eLements 1. 4 Compounds containing bonds between Lead and group 16 eLements 1. 5 Compounds containing bonds between Lead and group 15 eLements 1. 6 Compounds containing bonds between Lead and Si, Ge, or Sn 1.

Case-Based Reasoning Technology - - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

Case-Based Reasoning Technology - - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

Humanexpertsarenotsystemsofrules, theyarelibrariesofexperiences. Riesbeck and Schank (1989, p.15) Broadlyspeaking,case-basedreasoning(CBR)is concernedwith solvingnew problems by adapting solutions that worked for similar problems in the past. As with Arti cial Intelligence in general, case-based reasoning deals with two di erent aspects of intelligence: A r st motivation is to establish cog- tive models in order to understand human thinking and behavior. A second motivationis to buildsystemswhichhelpto solvereal-worldproblems.These twofacetscanbeconsideredastwosidesofthesamecoin.Traditionally,CBR researchinEuropehasconcentratedverymuchonthesecondaspect, though, of course, successful projects are not possible without a sound theory. The objective of this book is to summarize the results of recent years of research in CBR. A strong emphasis is put on projects performed and - plications developed in Germany. However, research has not been performed in isolation. Rather, a large number of cooperations between research sites throughout the world have been established which provided a fertile ground for the community. Hence, it is only natural that work from colleagues from France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United States has been included in this volume. This book is not intended to be a textbook giving a comprehensive overview of the eld. Rather, the objective is to consider in detail di - ent potential application areas, to work out the pros and cons of using CBR and to summarize the lessons learned from projects. For this, we assume that the reader already has at least a basic understanding of what case-based reasoning is all about.
