The “Stats in the Château” summer school was held at the CRC château on the campus of HEC Paris, Jouy-en-Josas, France, from August 31 to September 4, 2009. This event was organized jointly by faculty members of three French academic institutions ─ ENSAE ParisTech, the Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech, and HEC Paris ─ which cooperate through a scientific foundation devoted to the decision sciences. The scientific content of the summer school was conveyed in two courses, one by Laurent Cavalier (Université Aix-Marseille I) on "Ill-posed Inverse Problems", and one by Victor Chernozhukov (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on "High-dimensional Estimation with Applications to Economics". Ten invited researchers also presented either reviews of the state of the art in the field or of applications, or original research contributions. This volume contains the lecture notes of the two courses. Original research articles and a survey complement these lecture notes. Applications to economics are discussed in various contributions.

A few years ago, at the Symposium of Neuroradiology in Rome, ZIEDSES DES PLANTES made a decisive contribution to cerebral angiography with photographic subtraction. From this time on, technical advances, anatomical findings, therapeutic tests such as embolization, development of stereo taxy, and computerized axial tomography have opened a wide field for cerebral angiography. These important findings became the subject of a scientific meeting. The quality of the presentations and the results of each re port made this a most interesting symposium. The European Workshop on Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis was organized for the first time at Geilo, Norway, 8-11 April 1980. Since then, these meetings have been held in Holland, France, Italy, England, Sweden/Finland (Aland), Germany, and Bel gium. This year the circle has been closed: The 9th European Testis Workshop is back in the Norwegian mountains where it all started. The Scientific Committee of the First European Testis Workshop included Dr. H.J. van der Molen (Rotterdam), Dr. V. Hansson (Oslo), Dr. B. Cooke (London), Dr. V. Monesi (Rome), Dr. E.M. Ritzen (Stockholm), and Dr. J.M. Saez (Paris). Since then, two of the founders have left the Scientific Committee. Dr. Monesi died suddenly on 29 December 1979, 3 1/2 months before the first workshop took place. Thus, in spite of being one of the founders, he never experienced a Eu ropean Testis Workshop. Dr. Mario Stefanini, from the same research institute in Rome, replaced Dr. Monesi on the Scientific Committee. Another founder of this workshop series, Dr. H.J. van der Molen (Rot terdam), is one of the pioneers in research on molecular endocrinology of the testis in Europe. He left the Scientific Committee due to a change in his scientific career and was replaced by Dr. F.F.G. Rom merts, whose lectures on "Testomania" have been a characteristic fea ture of these meetings.

The French physician FRAN(fOIS DU PORT was the actual author of the book ) La Decade de Medecine ou Le Medecin des Riches et des Pauvres(. Working for thirty years as a country doctor enabled him to report the symptoms and causes of different diseases, and during the reign of LOUIS XIII (1601-1643), he recorded his experiences in Latin verse. In I 69 1, the adviser and official physician to LOUIS XIV Du FOUR acquired the rights to Du PORT''S book: he transcribed the doctor''s experiences into French verse and in 1694, in Paris, )La Decade de Medecine ou Le Medecin des Riches et des Pauvres ( was published in Latin and French verse. In 1980, whilst staying in Avignon, France, M. DIEHL chanced upon a copy of this edition, which was then exactly 286 years old. Her father, H. DIEHL, was fascinated by the possibility of gaining an insight into the diagnostic and thera peutic practices of the 17th century in this unusual way. As soon as he returned home, he started translating the book into German: It is divided into 10 sections with 253 chapters and approxi mately 500 pages. The book was translated into English by Dr. DAVID LE VAY, Wadhurst, Eng land, in 1988.

One of the great challenges of modem aerospace engineering is undoubt edly the prediction of hypersonic flows for the design of space vehicles. An important and continuous effort has taken place in that direction the last few years with the development of hypersonics programs such as the NASP program in the U. S. and more recently the HERMES program in Europe, which rely heavily on the the use of supercomputers. As can be expected this great challenge has been influencing both civil and military programs related to aerospace sciences and industry. Advanced mathematical models are a basic requirement for the de velopment of efficient numerical methods able to simulate accurately the phenomena that occur during the hypersonic part of the flight of space vehicles. Despite continuous advances in computer hardware and software and also the experience gained during the past three decades by researchers who have provided guidance for those who follow now, we strongly be lieve that a better understanding of hypersonic flow is still an important factor of scientific and technological progress. On the basis of this belief, the International Workshop on Hypersonic Flows for Reentry Problems, Part II, took place in Antibes, France, from 15 to 19 April 1991. This workshop, whose proceedings form this volume, was a clear continua tion of the Euro-American short courses on hypersonics held in Paris in 1987, Colorado Springs in 1989, and Aachen in 1990 and the workshop on hypersonic flow which took place in Antibes, in January 1990.
