Monte Carlo Simulation - Christopher Z. Mooney - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Monte Carlo Simulation is a method of evaluating substantive hypotheses and statistical estimators by developing a computer algorithm to simulate a population, drawing multiple samples from this pseudo-population, and evaluating estimates obtained from these samples. Christopher Z. Mooney explains the logic behind Monte Carlo Simulation and demonstrates its uses for social and behavioral research in conducting inference using statistics with only weak mathematical theory, testing null hypotheses under a variety of plausible conditions, assessing the robustness of parametric inference to violations of its assumptions, assessing the quality of inferential methods, and comparing the properties of two or more estimators. In addition, Mooney carefully demonstrates how to prepare computer algorithms using GAUSS code and illustrates these principles using several research examples. is a method of evaluating substantive hypotheses and statistical estimators by developing a computer algorithm to simulate a population, drawing multiple samples from this pseudo-population, and evaluating estimates obtained from these samples. Violence in America - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Violence in America - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Violence in America: The History of Crime presents a wealth of new research on the long-term dynamics of murder and other crimes of violence. The contributors clearly identify and diagnose the painful circumstances of recurring epidemics of violent crime that have swept the American society over the past 150 years. Among the possible causes discussed are waves of immigration, the social dislocations of war, and growing concentrations of urban poverty. In addition, this engaging volume offers an evaluation of the traits of political assassins and an assessment of the pros and cons of gun control--and whether or not it will help to reduce crimes of violence. Surprisingly, the contributors to this compelling volume present the idea that the past and present dynamics of violent crime, projected into the future, suggest grounds for cautious optimism. This outlook is based on recent increases in effective criminal justice policies and the widespread efforts to remedy the social disintegration that breeds violent crime. Students and professionals in history, criminology, victimology, political science, and other related fields will find this volume to be essential reading. (For both volumes) "This is a major, timely, and immensely welcome addition to the literature on violence in American society. With fresh scholarship and new insights, it updates a classic study of violence first published in 1969. It would make a valuable addition to courses on American social history as well as classes specifically addressing violence and crime in this society." --John J. Broesamle, California State University, Northridge

Statistical Strategies for Small Sample Research - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Statistical Strategies for Small Sample Research - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Newer statistical models, such as structural equation modeling and hierarchical linear modeling, require large sample sizes inappropriate for many research questions or unrealistic for many research arenas. How can researchers get the sophistication and flexibility of large sample studies without the requirement of prohibitively large samples? This book describes and illustrates statistical strategies that meet the sophistication/flexibility criteria for analyzing data from small samples of fewer than 150 cases. Contributions from some of the leading researchers in the field cover the use of multiple imputation software and how it can be used profitably with small data sets and missing data; ways to increase statistical power when sample size cannot be increased; and strategies for computing effect sizes and combining effect sizes across studies. Other contributions describe how to hypothesis test using the bootstrap; methods for pooling effect size indicators from single-case studies; frameworks for drawing inferences from cross-tabulated data; how to determine whether a correlation or covariance matrix warrants structure analysis; and what conditions indicate latent variable modeling is a viable approach to correct for unreliability in the mediator. Other topics include the use of dynamic factor analysis to model temporal processes by analyzing multivariate; time-series data from small numbers of individuals; techniques for coping with estimation problems in confirmatory factor analysis in small samples; how the state space model can be used with surprising accuracy with small data samples; and the use of partial least squares as a viable alternative to covariance-based SEM when the N is small and/or the number of variables in a model is large.
