Yves Saint Laurent - Patrick Mauries - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

An exclusive homage to – and retrospective of – the iconic fashion designer''s couture accessories. ‘One can never overstate the importance of accessories. They are what turns a dress into something else. I like dresses to be sober and accessories to be wild’ – Yves Saint Laurent, 1977. Yves Saint Laurent Accessories is the first book to date to shed light on the breathtaking accessories created by one of the most influential fashion designers of all time. From his first collection in 1962 to his acclaimed final presentation in 2002, Yves Saint Laurent created exquisite jewellery, hats, shoes, and handbags to complement and enhance each of his couture creations. Beautifully designed, in a small format evocative of a jewellery box, the book offers an unprecedented glimpse into the highly confidential archives of The Yves Saint Laurent Foundation in Paris, which is home to over 20,000 remarkable accessories. The book features specially commissioned photography of the accessories alongside a treasure trove of rare materials including preparatory sketches, intimate portraits of Saint Laurent at work, behind-the-scenes snapshots of models, catwalk photographs, and advertising campaigns. Yves Saint Laurent Accessories introduces readers to a prominent yet rarely seen side of Saint Laurent''s art, leading them backstage and through the history of a house that helped to shape the course of fashion.

Magritte - Richard Calvocoressi - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Magritte - Richard Calvocoressi - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The paintings of the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte (1898–1967) have exerted an extraordinary fascination, particularly since the enormous increase in awareness and popularity of his work during the 1960s. Magritte shows us a world of silence and isolation in which familiar objects are altered or juxtaposed in ‘impossible’ combinations in order to create a sense of disorientation and the absurd. Many of his most memorable paintings date from his three prolific years 1927–30, when he lived near Paris and was in close touch with the writer André Breton and other French Surrealists. In his pre-war painting, stylistic concerns were of secondary importance to Magritte, whose main interest was in ideas or propositions about the world; for example, many of his paintings explore the relation between objects and words or between the image of an object and the object itself. He deliberately cultivated a cold, unemotive, ‘style-less’ style. This quality renders the images of violence and macabre sexuality in some of his works all the more disturbing. His own ‘impressionist’ and vache (ugly, crude) pictures of the 1940s have been rediscovered in the last few years by a younger generation of painters and critics keenly responsive to the later work of other masters of parody and allusion such as Picabia and de Chirico.Richard Calvocoressi''s highly successful introduction to Magritte was first published in 1979 and revised and enlarged by the addition of notes to the colour plates and many black-and-white illustrations.

Tadao Ando - Tadao Ando - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A stunning portfolio of work by Japan’s leading contemporary architect, showcasing exquisite photography of 28 extraordinary projects selected by Ando Following the acclaimed first volume in Tadao Ando’s monograph series with Phaidon, Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light (1996), this new volume showcases the continual collaboration between Ando and photographer Richard Pare. Beginning with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, and concluding with the Bourse de Commerce project, located in Paris, the book features Pare’s stunning photographs of 28 contemporary projects in locations around the world, including Japan, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Italy, and the United States. Pare’s images, most of which have never been published, expertly capture Ando’s quietly powerful approach to architectural design. Created in close collaboration with Ando and his studio, Light and Space opens with a foreword by the architect, an introduction by architect Dominique Perrault, and four original drawings Ando created specifically for this book, printed on thin tissue paper. The Plates section features spare layouts and immersive gatefolds throughout, with Pare’s images offering unique insights into Ando’s acute attention to light and volume and how they engage with one another. An appendix, printed on textured paper, offers additional information about each project, including technical specifications, a brief descriptive text, as well as detailed sections and plans. This clothbound, jacketed book closely aligns with the packaging of the first volume, creating an elegant companion set.

Nancy Spero - Sylvere Lotringer - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Nancy Spero - Sylvere Lotringer - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

American artist Nancy Spero (b.1929) concentrates on the depiction of women: mythological women, movie women, tortured women. Inspired by classical and modern sources, she collages and imprints her contemporary goddesses on to long, papyrus-like friezes that scroll around museum walls. Her subject matter, which has ranged from the writings of Artaud to the Vietnam War, mirrors her life. Working in Paris in the cultural ferment of the 1960s, she moved to New York in the 1970s to co-establish the feminist gallery A.I.R. and to join with artists and critics such as Leon Golub, Robert Morris and Lucy R Lippard in forming the Art Workers'' Coalition. Since the 1980s she has attracted international acclaim, her exquisite works giving form to feminist issues and new critical discourses. The Survey by Jon Bird, cultural theorist and curator of the first British retrospective of Spero''s work, discusses developments in her practice since the 1950s. Contemporary art scholar and critic Jo Anna Isaak talks with the artist about her life and work. Art historian Sylvere Lotringer, Edtior of Semiotext(e) and author of Overexposed , focuses on her 1993 installation at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In recognition of the impact Stanley Kubrick''s Dr Strangelove made on her, Spero has chosen a scene from the screenplay; key excerpts from Gynesis: Configurations of Woman and Modernity by feminist theorist Alice Jardine on the place of women in a patriarchal culture complete the Artist''s Choice section. Also included are a selection of Spero''s own writings, many published here for the first time.

Mona Hatoum - Catherine De Zegher - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Mona Hatoum - Catherine De Zegher - Bog - Phaidon Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Mona Hatoum creates events, videos, sculptures and installations that relate to the body, to language and to the condition of exile. Her most famous work Corps Etranger , first shown at the Tate Gallery when she was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1995, takes the viewer on a journey through the inner passages of the artist''s body. Her audience is thrown into a dimension in which anything is possible, as in The Light at the End , which lures viewers down a long tunnel towards a light that will literally burn them. While her video work is often visceral and emotive, her sculptures and environments are ultra cool and minimal in their aesthetic. They often mimic domestic or institutional furniture, yet their designs and materials have a threatening edge. Exquisitely beautiful, Hatoum''s works are at the same time powerful evocations of statelessness, anxiety, denial and otherness. Since Hatoum was exiled to London, where she has lived and worked since the 1970s, she has exhibited her work around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Venice Biennale. This book surveys all her work, ranging from early performances, through to her videos, objects and full-scale environments. The distinguished art critic Guy Brett, author of Through Our Own Eyes: Popular Art and Modern History (1986), explores key themes around a sense of place, the body and communication that emerge from Hatoum''s range of work. The artist describes a chronology of practice in conversation with Michael Archer, writer, curator and co-founder of London''s Audio Arts sound archive. Director of the Kanaal Art Foundation Catherine de Zegher makes a complex and provocative analysis of Recollection , a work she commissioned for a sixteenth-century beguinage. Hatoum has chosen a text by the influential Palestinian author Edward Said as well as a statement from the noted Italian post-war sculptor and performance artist Piero Manzoni. The book also includes Hatoum''s own notes, statements and interviews.
