Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. This short – 88 pages in total – book includes an interview with the composer, sensitive and expert probing of the influences on his work with many examples included for illustration and a list of Howells’ principal works. The book is widely considered a trail-blazing study, a work of essential reading for those intrigued by the work of this composer.As well as being a writer on music and a biographer of musicians, the author Christopher Palmer was himself a most accomplished composer and arranger. He was extremely highly regarded as a symphonic Orchestrator, both of film scores and of symphonic suites based on the legacies of other composers.The book has an introduction by renowned Choral conductor Sir David Willcocks.
