The Political Life of Bella Abzug, 1920–1976: Political Passions, Women’s Rights, and Congressional Battles, by Alan H. Levy, marks the first full biography of Bella Abzug. Abzug was one of woman in politics in mid- and late-twentieth-century America. Levy traces the New York City world of Russian-Jewish immigrants into which Abzug was born. He then examines her education through Columbia Law School, her marriage, and her early work both as a labor attorney and as an advocate for many controversial causes, including that of an African-American falsely accused of raping a white woman in Jim Crow Era Mississippi. Levy studies Abzug’s work for nuclear disarmament, her activism against the Vietnam War, and her successful bid for Congress in 1970. From there, the biography details the myriad of issues with which Abzug grappled as a Member of Congress from 1971 to 1977, and ends with her close loss to Daniel Patrick Moynihan in a bid for the U.S. Senate in 1976. A second book, studying the rest of Abzug’s life from 1976 to 1998, is to follow.

Ontology after Philosophical Psychology addresses the question of William James’s continuity of consciousness, with a view to its possible actualizations. In particular, Michela Bella critically delineates James''s discourse. In the wake of Darwin''s theory of evolution at the end of the nineteenth century, James''s reflections emerged in the field of physiological psychology, where he developed for the case for a renewed epistemology and a new metaphysical framework to help us understand the most interesting theories and scientific discoveries about the human mind. Bella’s analysis of the theme of continuity makes it possible to appreciate, both historically and theoretically, the importance of James''s gradual transition from making observations of experimental psychology on the continuity of thought to developing an epistemological and ontological argument that continuity is a characteristic of experience and reality. This analysis makes it possible both to clarify James''s position in relation to his historical context and to highlight the most original results of his work.

This inductive study investigates the "curricula" of ten different news organizations from seven different countries that produced news in four languages on the Darfur uprising in Western Sudan: the New York Times, the Washington Post, France''s Le Monde, the UK''s Guardian, BBC.co.uk, Egypt''s Al-Ahram, South Africa''s Mail & Guardian Online, English.AlJazeera.Net, and China''s People''s Daily and China Daily. Mody and her collaborators show how news organizations uniquely and strategically constructed a foreign event for a particular intended audience based on national historical solidarity with global North or South power blocs, current national interest in the country, ownership of the news organization, and the political-linguistic constituency of the intended audience. While previous research on the role of national interest and ownership are supported in this study, the influence of the intended audience (namely, foreign or domestic) on the design of news is a new contribution to the field. Conceptualizing foreign news as perhaps the only means of cross-national, continuing education, Mody uses comprehensiveness as an evaluative measure of news. The Geopolitics of Representation in Foreign News provides unique insights that will be of particular interest to those researchers working in the field of international journalism.
