Willy Guhl - - Bog - Lars Muller Publishers - Plusbog.dk

As a pioneer of modern design, Willy Guhl created world-famous furniture such as the Eternit garden chair or Europe’s first plastic shell chair. In the tradition of modernism and against the traditional Heimatstil, after 1945 he developed a holistic design approach oriented to human beings and their needs; functionality and reduction to the essential characterize his everyday objects. In collaboration with Swiss companies such as Dietiker, Eternit and Aebi, Willy Guhl designed seating furniture, planters and mowing machines.Willy Guhl’s designs, his teaching methods and his image archive bear witness to the innovationsof the booming design industry of the post-war period and the changing professional image ofthe industrial designer. As a teacher and later head of the class for interior and product design at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts from 1941 to 1980, Willy Guhl influenced generations of Swiss designers, including Robert Haussmann, Kurt Thut and Andreas Christen. The trained carpenter and interior designer passed on his design knowledge “hands-on,” with illustrative objects, by model making and storytelling. This first comprehensive monograph illuminates Willy Guhl’s legacy in the context of this designand teaching practice as well as current theories of the design discipline. As a thematically structured catalog of works, it offers a complete index of all design projects, and illustrates in sketches, plans and photographs his exploratory working method and his passion for material and technology, which is equally evident in the selection of exemplary student works.

Designing Universal Knowledge - Gerlinde Schuller - Bog - Lars Muller Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Designing Universal Knowledge - Gerlinde Schuller - Bog - Lars Muller Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The development of modern communication and information technologies like the Internet and globalization have not only changed access and spread of the available knowledge but also the speed of collecting. The author examines collections of knowledge such as archives, encyclopedias, data collections, and libraries that make knowledge accessible worldwide. Who is collecting the world's knowledge? How is it structured and designed? Who determines the access of knowledge? Designers and researchers from different fields have set standards for the classification and design of complex data collections and thus exerted an enormous influence on how knowledge is communicated. This facilitates knowledge transfer, but it also increases the danger of manipulation. Along with these aspects, the book also explores the possibilities of ?universal design? and presents new approaches to visualizing complex information. Gerlinde Schuller investigated the subject in interviews with Richard Saul Wurman, John Maeda, Nigel Holmes, Wim Crouwel, Paul Kahn, Jean-Noël Jeanneney, Rop Gonggrijp, Marion Winkenbach, Hannah Hurtzig and Martin Alberts. The book also includes essays by Alex Wright, Willem van Weelden, Markus Frenzl and Femke Snelting. AUTHOR: Gerlinde Schuller is head of the Information Design Studio in Amsterdam (NL). She is specialized in information design and visual journalism, she teaches information design and writes about the discipline. Her visual-editorial projects include the book 'Making the Impossible Possible' (2006) on economic superlatives and 'Designing universal knowledge' (2008) on information design. www.theworldasflatland.net 650 illustrations
