Widerspruchliche Bewegungsreize - Markus Huber - Bog - Edition Patrick Frey - Plusbog.dk

Widerspru?chliche Bewegungsreize picks up where the author’s previous book, Universen (Edition Patrick Frey, 2011), left off and gives visible, palpable form to their artistic work over the past ten years, transporting the reader once again into a teeming pictorial cosmos. In contrast to Universen, however, this artist’s book features huber. huber’s photographs rather than collages and ink drawings. Presented in two-page spreads, the pictorial compositions form ascending and descending series of various lengths in which other images using other techniques are embedded. The upshot is a dazzling tapestry of images, producing a sort of visual dissonance which, in extreme cases, is liable to cause the same symptoms as motion sickness. Brief texts (translated into a total of seven different languages), ranging from succinct descriptions to associative sensory impressions, provide clues to some of the compositions and sequencing whilst also serving as agreeable interludes. A remarkably comprehensive index of nouns (e. g. “apple”, “petri dish”, “salt lake”) and adjectives (e. g. “moist”, “geometric”, “eerie”) helps to render the artists’ enigmatic visual cosmos readable. This new artist’s book goes far beyond the mere reproduction of photographs and once again masterfully reflects huber. huber’s artistic practices in the special medium of the book. – Mirjam Fischer

Early Drawings 1976–1998 - Karen Kilimnik - Bog - Edition Patrick Frey - Plusbog.dk

Early Drawings 1976–1998 - Karen Kilimnik - Bog - Edition Patrick Frey - Plusbog.dk

Karen Kilimnik’s artist’s book Early Drawings 1976–1998 is kind of a prequel to Kilimnik’s Drawings, also published by Edition Patrick Frey in 1997. Early Drawings 1976–1998 brings together the artist’s own rich and varied selection of around 130 never before published early works on paper. Detailed, finely worked pastel drawings created between 1976 and 1998 are presented along with ink drawings and other work from that same period; together they illuminate the scope, complexity and virtuosity of Kilimnik’s thematic world. For more than forty years, Kilimnik has navigated an inexhaustible cosmos influenced by the traditions of Romantic painting, portraiture, and landscape painting. Her work gives equal weight to a broad array of subject matter, finding inspiration in such diverse sources as popular culture and fairy tales, Old Master paintings and television programs, films, literature, magazines, advertising, as well as window displays. The result dissolves the distinctions between “high” and “low” culture. This creative mixture appears in some of Kilimnik’s earliest output: after studying art and architecture in Philadelphia, the artist exhibited a series of genre-bending constellations in the mid-1980s and early 1990s; assembled works included paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures, and films. Her oeuvre explores themes of mythology and femininity, history and fiction. Early Drawings 1976–1998 is published on the occassion of a double exhibition bearing the same title at Galerie Eva Presenhuber in New York and at Sprüth Magers in London, which was shown in early summer 2022.

Early Retirement - Mark Gibson - Bog - Edition Patrick Frey - Plusbog.dk

Early Retirement - Mark Gibson - Bog - Edition Patrick Frey - Plusbog.dk

Over the course of 2016, with the American presidential election looming ever-larger, Mark Thomas Gibson wondered: Why are there no utopias? Why are we no longer striving to create one? He began drawing at his kitchen table in search of answers to the question of the long-lost quest for utopia. Early Retirement begs the crucial question: how do we find the strength to come together against relentless adversity in the United States of America?Early Retirement, narrated by a shadowy figure from American history, revolves around Mr. Wolfson, a werewolf and Doomsday prophet in New York City’s street prophecy scene, and The Drummer, one of the three heralds of the Apocalypse. One day, The Drummer learns that the Truth has been delivered to Mr. Wolfson. Things quickly spiral out of control, leading to a three-way standoff between the Will of the People, the Will of Government and the Will of God. Gibson’s personal lens on American culture stems from his viewpoint as an artist, a black male, a professor at Yale, an American history buff and comic book nerd. All this fuels his exploration of American culture through the high and low visual languages of painting and comics to reveal a narrative that spells out our fabricated destruction. Gibson uses black ink to create stark contrasts and settings in which positive and negative space define the composition. He relies on a minimal aesthetic, playing off of both fine art and the comic book vernacular of sequential narrative. He rarely edits his drawings, trusting what goes down on the page to take form organically and tell a legible story, trusting his drawings to provide answers, to tell us the future, the truth.
