Regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century, Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) had a distinctively nationalistic style. One of his earliest surviving works, La Vida Breve is a short, 2-act opera written in his local Andalusian dialect, although it was quickly translated into French. Not as popular as his later works, the full opera is rarely performed today, but the orchestral interludes do remain common. Imagine this:" We loved your Jupiter Symphony Mr. Mozart, but it's 3 minutes less than we commissioned."Fortunately most composers cheat a bit, and most commissioners don't sit with stopwatches in their hands.1000 bars is not 1000 bars long. I stopped when the piece was finished. However it did turn out to be exactly 4'33" in duration.What the piece itself is about has nothing to do with its title or length. - Kevin Volans

This work was commissioned by Rudolf Steiner Foundation. It is dedicated to Anssi Karttunen, who gave the first performance in Helsinki on 10th September 2000.Sept papillons was the first piece Saariaho wrote after her opera L'Amour de loin and it was partly written during the rehearsals of the opera in Salzburg. One can sense the desire to find a new world, which has nothing to do with the opera neither in style nor in language. From the metaphors of the opera which all have an eternal quality - love, yearning and death - she moved now to a metaphor of the ephemeral: butterfly. Also, from the long time-spans of the opera she moved to these seven miniatures, which each seem to be studies on a different aspect of fragile and ephemeral movement that has no beginning nor end.

Aleksandr Rodchenko (1881-1956) drew attention to the new type of photographer as someone who photographs 'facts' and who is able, through photography, to fight against 'looking like art' with high quality examples, and to do this you have to experiment, going as far as the ?easelisation? of the photographic art.The work was written for, and first performed by, the Ahn Trio in November 2004, in Salt Lake City, and is dedicated to the memory of John Peel, the British radio disc jockey who died during the final stages of its composition." - Michael Nyman

Written for the International Contemporary Ensemble and for Tenor Peter Tantsits. The work was created through ICE’s First Page Commissioning Program thanks to the lead support of Frances Kazan. The first performance was given on 3 August 2016 in Hearst Plaza at Lincoln Center, New York City, U.S.A. Performance notes: "As a composer I have a tendency to write music in rather low dynamics. The dynamics indicate an atmosphere and the urge to approach the music with a sense of calm rather than merely indicating the dynamic level. I do not intend for the music tobe too quiet – but rather projecting a sense of serenity. I would kindly ask that the dynamics be tuned to the location of the performance and subtly dramatized as appropriate with regards to the performance space and/or concert venue. ‘To the accompaniment of everyday life’ indicates an atmospheric approach to the music that suggests fragility and loneliness. The work was commissioned to be premiered outside, so the music was inspired by the notion of hearing the environment “accompanying” the music." - Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
