In LithoMania , part of the Design Lab exhibition series at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, students from the Idar-Oberstein campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences explore the complex ambivalence of gemstones, going beyond their use in jewellery design through objects, drawings, photographs, and texts. This publication presents the results of a competition that was initiated by the Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen to promote the artistic and creative use of steel as a material, and that was held in the department of metal design in the Design Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim. A portrait of an eminent jewelry artist and her unique creations! Inspired by the Arte Povera movement, the Italian jewelry artist Annamaria Zanella (b. 1966) uses base materials, which only gain meaning through their context. Corroded metal or found objects convey statements that can be both political and personal in nature. Zanella wants to bring the soul of the material to light through the work of her own hands. The color used is intended to evoke feelings and reactions. To this end Zanella studied the history of colors and their production, especially that of her unmistakable blue. She produced a blue pigment according to a recipe from the fourteenth century, invoking in its modern use pioneering artists such as Giotto, Wassily Kandinsky and Yves Klein. The oeuvre of Deganit Stern Schocken (b. 1947) has delved into the socio-political question of place, creating works in which text is incorporated as an integral part of the object; in the process the artist has adhered to the classical language of jewelry while employing state-of-the-art technologies. The book explores the architectural-planning aspect in Stern Schocken''s jewellery. While each object stands in its own right (like a building), it is also part of a system (the city). The trial-and-error process of casting and the notion of ''value'' also play an important role in the artist''s work, which alludes to local society and Israeli reality.
