Training in design in Germany is multifaceted and unique, unparalleled in Europe for breadth of range. The Goldsmithing and Watch-making School in Pforzheim provides a three-year college course in design, jewellery-making and tableware, which, since the school was founded in 1988, has earned it a deserved reputation as being state-of-the-art in training future makers of jewellery and tableware. Graduates are full-fledged designers examined by the state. The aim of the college is to teach assurance in handling material and form. The holistic approach to training here enables graduates to be equally successful in professions other than jewellery-making and tableware, indeed all professions in which, besides craftsmanship and technical skills, creativity and professionalism in dealing with form and design are required. Here a highly creative pool of young, internationally oriented jewellery-designers is created, unleashing a potential which is bound to be much talked of in future. Mastery of traditional techniques, unself-conscious perspectives on prevailing styles and bold exploration of new possibilities for design are the hallmarks of tomorrow''s jewellery and tableware. Twenty years of professional college training represent a welcome occasion for taking stock and looking back. Many successful designers have been "forged in this crucible"; their activities are shaping how we perceive a wide range of design-related fields. Text in English and German.

This publication presents the results of a competition that was initiated by the Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen to promote the artistic and creative use of steel as a material, and that was held in the department of metal design in the Design Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim. Diverse pieces of jewellery and small-scale sculptures were created as a result, which either make use of the brittle hardness of the material or else override these properties. They open up unusual insights into contemporary applied metal art, situated between artistic uniqueness and design-orientated craftsmanship. Jewellery and objects by four award winners are presented, as well as work by students and graduates. The presentation is enhanced with works by established artists, which complete the spectrum and the possibilities of designing with steel. Winfried Krüger (born 1944) belongs to that generation of jewellery artists who witnessed the birth of avant-garde jewellery in the 1960s. The skilled goldsmith liberated himself from precision, fineness and other virtues of his craft in order to allow free rein to his creativity. For Krüger jewellery is ever-present. From the tread of a shoe via the launch pad of a firework to the set of a science fiction film - he finds inspiration in all of these things. Translated into metal, extraordinary artworks are then created, which in the examination of ideas, form, materiality and surface show a modern, innovative understanding of jewellery, which he has imparted to his students over twenty years as lecturer at the technical college for design in Pforzheim.Despite this, Winfried Krüger has, as far as publishing his work is concerned, played hard to get. For the very first time this monograph presents the artist''s work in a comprehensive retrospective, whose focus rests on the work from the last twenty years.Winfried Krüger is represented in numerous prestigious museums and collections, including Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (DE), Designmuseo, Helsinki (FI), Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (DE), Stedelijk Museum''s-Hertogenbosch (NL), Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal (CAN), Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich (DE), Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen (NL), Musée de design et d''arts appliqués contemporains, Lausanne (CH).Text in English and German.
