Composed by Pierre Villette , Ave Verum, Op. 3 is a Eucharistic hymn for SATB choral a cappella. Dedicated to the Chapel Master at Rouen Cathedral, Sir Canon Delestre, this piece is highly lyrical and melodious. Written in Latin, its tempo is quite slow (52) and it includes numerous harmonies as well as some short exchanges between the voices. The polytonal aspects are probably the most difficult part of the singing and the actual title means "Hail, True Body", the main lyrics glorify Jesus. Another music setting of this hymn was composed by Mozart. Pierre Villette (1926-1998) was a French composer of choral and instrumental music. Strongly influenced by Catholicism, his musical heritage ran from Fauré to Messiaen.

Henri Dutilleux: Sonate (Oboe & Piano)

Created in 1947 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire, this Sonate for Oboe and Piano is one of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013), a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy with an idiosyncratic way of writing. Sonate was part of the compositions that were later disowned by the composer who considered them as being not mature enough compared to his main work, even though they were played and enjoyed regularly all over the world. This duet integrates a variety of contrapuntal procedures, which were highly appreciated by the composer. Composed of three movements, the first one begins with an austere canon while the latter two comprise more texture. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, among many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world), the Violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).

An educationalist of renown, Viola player Valérie Bime-Apparailly (born in 1962 in Bordeaux) is the author of numerous beginner methods for string instruments that have met with unflagging success. The second volume of the series Je Débute L’Alto once again takes up the challenge of the first collection: to combine precision with the pleasure of playing. To do this, each chapter starts with a short sequence of exercises enabling pupils to approach the pieces with serenity and concentration. Reduced to their simplest expression, the theoretical explanations are accompanied by sketches that enhance their clarity. The album comes with a playback CD containing recordings of the different pieces. A relaxed eclecticism runs through the work: illustrious classics such as the Habanera from Carmen or the Variations sur “Ah ! Like D’une prison and Cygnes , these songs do more than wet the eyes: they grip the heart.

These studies do not correspond to a method for Tuba and it is generally understood that 70 studies are actually inspired from another piece of work from Blazhevich : 'Clef Studies for Trombone', even though 13 of these 70 studies did not appear in it. They were not transposed for Tuba but adapted for this instrument. These studies have become part of the basic teaching methods and these books are some of the most-mentioned study books for Tuba which are very popular. While they help to develop the Tuba techniques, they can be used by different age ranges and different skill ranges. Vladislav Blazhevich (1881-1942) is a Russian Tuba player, conductor and professor. He was also an amazing composer, who created many methods for Wind instruments as well as concerti, studies and musical pieces. Robert King (1914-1999) was an American editor who specialised in Brass composition. He created the 'Brass Player’s Guide' in the 1950s and developed strong relationship with Alphonse Leduc Éditions.
